AirPods 4 & USB-C AirPods Max: iFixit gives insight

AirPods 4 Teardown

Apple recently launched the AirPods 4 and an updated version of the AirPods Max with a USB-C port. iFixit, known for its detailed teardowns, took a closer look at the new models and provided insight into their internal components and repairability.

iFixit is known for its comprehensive teardowns of electronics, analyzing repairability and internal hardware. They also took apart the new AirPods 4 and USB-C AirPods Max. The results show that Apple has made little change to the internal structure, and repairability remains a challenge.

AirPods 4 without ANC: Hardly any changes compared to their predecessors

The AirPods 4 differ little internally from the AirPods 3, as the iFixit teardown shows. This version does not have active noise cancellation (ANC) and offers essentially the same internal components as the previous model. The charging case contains a 345 mAh battery, the same as in the AirPods 3. This means that both the battery capacity and the runtime have remained unchanged.

Repairability remains a problem

As with previous models, the AirPods 4 received a 0/10 on iFixit's repairability scale. The earbuds are extremely difficult to open and repair, meaning that if they break, Apple's replacement is almost inevitable. This also applies to the charging case, which, like the AirPods themselves, is designed to be virtually irreparable.

AirPods Max with USB-C: Few changes

In addition to the AirPods 4, iFixit also examined the redesigned AirPods Max, which now feature a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port. Aside from this change, there are no major internal differences from the original version of the AirPods Max. The structure and components remained largely unchanged.

AirPods 4 and AirPods Max: Minimal changes, major repair problems

The iFixit teardown confirms that Apple made only minimal internal changes to the AirPods 4 without ANC and the USB-C AirPods Max. Repairability remains a major issue, meaning users will likely have to resort to a full replacement in the event of a defect. Those who already own the AirPods 3 or the original AirPods Max will find little technical reason to upgrade in the new models, unless the USB-C port is a deciding factor. (Image: Apple)
