Apple is working on one of the biggest updates for the iPhone in over a decade. iOS 19 is expected to be unveiled at WWDC in June and is expected to bring major changes not only visually but also functionally. Initial leaks indicate that Apple is aiming for a more consistent design language across all devices while also expanding AI capabilities in Siri. A staggered rollout of new features is also likely.

Every year, Apple introduces fresh features and improvements with a new iOS update. While iOS 18 focused on AI and personalization, iOS 19 is primarily intended to fundamentally overhaul the design. This includes not only adjusting icons and menus, but also the entire user experience. Siri is also expected to become more intelligent and more integrated into apps. In this article, you'll learn all the latest rumors and what you can expect from iOS 19.

Revised design – The biggest iPhone update since iOS 7

Apple plans to redesign all operating systems, including iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16. The goal is to make switching between iPhone, iPad, and Mac more seamless. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, this is the biggest visual change since iOS 7 in 2013. The new user interface is based on Apple's Vision Pro software—visionOS. Transparency and a minimalist design are intended to bring content more to the forefront. Icons, menus, apps, and system buttons will be redesigned, while navigation and controls will be optimized. Particular attention will be paid to the Camera app, which will feature a new user interface that offers more space for photo previews. There will also be transparent pop-out menus that make it easier to switch camera modes.

Apple Intelligence – AI features for more apps

Apple will expand Apple Intelligence features to more apps. There's no concrete indication yet as to which apps will benefit, but there's speculation that Apple Music could automatically generate playlists. Some of the new AI features were originally planned for iOS 18. However, since they weren't ready in time, they could now be introduced with iOS 19.

Siri Updates – More Context and App Integration

Siri is expected to become significantly more intelligent with iOS 19. Apple had previously announced improvements for iOS 18, but had to postpone them. Three key innovations are expected:

  • Personal context: Siri can use information from emails, files, photos, and messages to provide more relevant answers. For example, Siri could automatically find a specific image you received in a message or retrieve important documents.
  • Onscreen awareness: Siri recognizes what's happening on the screen and can act accordingly. For example, if someone sends you an address, you can ask Siri to add it directly to a contact.
  • Deeper app integration: Siri should be able to perform complex tasks within apps, including editing and sending photos or moving files between applications.

In the long term, Apple is working on a version of Siri that could compete with ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Claude. However, this comprehensive LLM version of Siri is not expected until iOS 20 at the earliest.

Phased rollout – new features in stages

Apple likely won't release iOS 19 with all planned features in September. Even with iOS 18, some Apple Intelligence features weren't added until updates 18.1 and 18.2. This could happen again with iOS 19. One reason for this is the Siri improvements originally planned for iOS 18. Apple is apparently taking more time with development, which is why some features might not appear until 2026, i.e., with iOS 19.3, iOS 19.4, or iOS 19.5.

Compatibility – Which devices will receive iOS 19?

iOS 19 is designed to be compatible with all iPhones that already support iOS 18. So, if you have an iPhone that received iOS 18, you should also receive the next update. However, there may be certain features that only work on newer models like the iPhone 17 because they require more processing power.

Release date – When will iOS 19 be released?

Apple will unveil iOS 19 at WWDC in June 2025. This will be followed by a beta phase lasting several months before the update is officially released to all users in September. The new iPhone models, which will already have iOS 19 pre-installed, are also expected to be released at the same time.

New design, smarter Siri and more – iOS 19 at a glance

iOS 19 could be the biggest design update in over a decade. Apple isn't just redesigning the look, but also improving Siri and expanding AI integration. The camera app is getting a new user interface, and some features will likely be added later. Those already using iOS 18 can also install iOS 19, although some features may be reserved for newer iPhones. More details are sure to be revealed before the official launch in June.
