Apple had big plans for Siri. The new version of the voice assistant was supposed to be much more intelligent, offer deeper app integration and better understand contextual requests. But now it is clear: The update is being delayed considerably. Siri 2.0 was actually supposed to be introduced with iOS 18.4, but internal problems have set development back. Now Apple has officially confirmed that Siri 2.0 will not be released until 2026 at the earliest.

At the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024 (WWDC 2024), Apple presented a comprehensive AI strategy called "Apple Intelligence". The aim is to make Apple products more intelligent and to enhance them with modern artificial intelligence. The first functions are to be available in German with iOS 18.4, macOS 15.4, iPadOS 18.4 and visionOS 2.4 from April 2025. Apple is under pressure, especially when it comes to voice assistants. While Siri has hardly received any major improvements in recent years, competitors such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and ChatGPT-based assistants have become increasingly more powerful. Siri is now finally supposed to catch up and become more intelligent - but that will take more time than originally planned.

Why is Siri 2.0 delayed?

Apple has commented on the delay, confirming that development is taking longer than expected. No specific explanation has been given, but several factors are considered possible reasons for the delay.

Problems with language processing

In the future, Siri should respond better to contextual requests. This means that the assistant should not only understand individual commands, but also recognize connections from previous interactions and personal data. This type of language processing is technically demanding and requires a significant improvement in the AI models.

Challenges of app integration

One of the major innovations in Siri 2.0 is a deeper integration with Apple apps and third-party apps. In the future, users will not only be able to use Siri to retrieve information, but also to move content between apps or to perform certain actions directly. These functions must be extensively tested to ensure that they work reliably.

Data protection as a possible hurdle

Apple has traditionally placed great emphasis on data privacy and local data processing. While other companies often run AI models in the cloud, Apple wants to perform as many calculations as possible directly on the devices. This makes the implementation of AI functions more complex and could have caused an additional delay.

What new features does Siri 2.0 bring?

Although Siri 2.0 will not be released until 2026 at the earliest, there is already information about the planned innovations. These are intended to make the voice assistant significantly more powerful and integrate it more closely into the entire Apple ecosystem.

Better context processing

In the future, Siri will be able to better understand personal context. This means that the assistant will be able to respond to more complex requests that relate to previous conversations or stored content. For example:

Show me the emails about our vacation with Johanna last fall.

Siri should be able to filter out relevant emails and display them directly.

Recognizing screen contents

Another important improvement is the ability to detect and react to the current screen content. This could be useful in many situations:

  • Siri recognizes an address on a website and can transfer it directly to the Maps app.
  • An opened invoice can be scanned and saved as a payment reminder.
  • An image can be edited and sent directly to a contact.

Advanced app integration

In the future, Siri will be better able to connect to different apps. This means that users can ask Siri to move content between apps or perform certain actions. Here is an example:

Edit this image in Photoshop and send it to me via iMessage.

Siri then automatically takes over the editing and sending – without the user having to switch between the apps.

When is Siri 2.0 coming?

Apple has not given an exact release date. So far, all that is clear is that Siri will be released in 2026 at the earliest. There are two possible scenarios:

  • Siri 2.0 could be delivered as a major update with iOS 19.
  • If development takes longer, Siri may not be introduced until iOS 20, which Apple is expected to announce in summer 2026.

It is currently unclear which of the two variants is correct. Apple has not commented on how far development has progressed or what specific challenges still exist.

Apple under pressure: Can Siri 2.0 meet expectations?

The delay is a disappointment for many Apple users, as Siri has received few improvements in years. While competitors are becoming increasingly powerful, Siri remains outdated. The new version is supposed to change that – however, users will have to wait a long time. Until then, it remains to be seen whether Apple can truly implement its ambitious plans for Siri 2.0. The company is under pressure, as other providers have already made significant progress in the world of voice assistants. Apple now has to prove that the long wait for the new Siri is really worth it. The best accessories in one place: Our Amazon Storefront offers you top products, also for your HomeKit! (Image: Apple)
