Apple’s 5G modem: This is what awaits us in the near future

Apple has been working on its own 5G modem for years. However, development is taking much longer than originally planned. Nevertheless, current reports suggest that the first device with the new modem could soon hit the market. Here you can find all the details known so far about Apple's ambitious project.

Since Apple acquired Intel's modem division in 2019, tech enthusiasts around the world have been eagerly awaiting the company's unveiling of its own 5G modem. Development has been marked by setbacks, delays, and high expectations. But recent information gives reason to hope that Apple has made a breakthrough. What exactly is behind the project, and which devices will benefit from it? Here are the answers.

What has happened so far

Apple recognized years ago how important it is to maintain control over key hardware components. The company already develops its own processors such as the A series for iPhones or the M series for Macs. A 5G modem of its own should be the next logical step. The acquisition of Intel's modem division for one billion US dollars was a strong signal that Apple wants to become independent of Qualcomm. However, several years have passed since then and a 5G modem from Apple's own production has not yet reached a device. Numerous reports have suggested that development did not go as planned. Problems with overheating and slow speed meant that prototypes did not meet Apple's requirements. Apple's own attempts have so far performed worse, especially compared to the already established Qualcomm modems.

progress in development

Despite the initial difficulties, Apple now seems to have overcome some hurdles. According to reports, the company is working on a modem codenamed "V59", also known as "Centauri". This modem will not only support 5G but also WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. A major goal in development is to drastically reduce battery consumption. The new modem should work more efficiently than previous solutions, especially in low-power mode. Although Apple has made progress, according to a report by The Information, the modem cannot yet keep up with Qualcomm's current chips in terms of performance. In particular, support for the ultra-fast 5G mmWave technology is currently still missing.

Use in iPhone SE 4 and other devices

The first device to be equipped with Apple's 5G modem is the iPhone SE 4. This model is expected to be introduced in the first half of 2025. For the end of 2025, it is speculated that at least one of the new iPhone 17 models, presumably the iPhone 17 Air, will also be equipped with the new modem. However, it is notable that Apple plans not to use the modem in its flagship models such as the Pro iPhones at first. This suggests that Apple wants to test the modem in less prominent devices first before integrating it into the broader product range.

Other areas of application

While the 5G modem is not currently used in top models such as the iPhone 17 Pro, it seems to be particularly suitable for devices where energy efficiency is more important than pure performance. This includes the Apple Watch, for example, where low battery consumption plays a central role. Having its own modem could also help Apple reduce costs in the long term, even if this does not necessarily translate into cheaper prices for end customers.

Apple's 5G modem: A milestone after years of challenges?

After years of delays and technical challenges, there are strong indications that Apple will soon launch its 5G modem. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to be the first, and other devices will gradually be equipped with the new modem. Despite the current restrictions, Apple's commitment demonstrates how important independence and control over its own hardware are to the company. It remains exciting to see how the new modem will compare to the competition—and whether Apple can ultimately set another milestone in the technology industry. Looking for the best accessories?
