Apple is reportedly planning to launch smart glasses. According to a Bloomberg report, this could be an interim step before Apple offers a full-blown AR product. Glasses that are very similar to the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are being discussed. But for the Apple version to be truly useful for you, two crucial requirements must be met.
The idea of smart glasses isn't new. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are a current example of how technology can be discreetly integrated into everyday accessories. These glasses look like classic Ray-Ban pairs, but contain cameras, microphones, speakers, and a few controls. Without a display or AR features, they're still useful. The experience with this product demonstrates what Apple's approach must focus on.
What the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses offer
The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses look almost identical to regular sunglasses. When you wear them, others probably won't even notice that they're a technological device. The glasses deliberately do not have a display and are not augmented reality devices. Instead, they offer three main functions:
- An AI that can recognize what you see and answer questions about it
- Voice-based messaging where incoming messages are read aloud to you
- Hands-free photo and video capture from your own perspective (POV)
The AI function is impressive, but currently not very suitable for everyday use. While it sometimes provides surprisingly precise answers based on visual cues, after a few tests the function quickly loses its relevance. The other two functions are more practical and genuinely useful in everyday life: having messages read aloud and taking hands-free photos. It's particularly convenient when walking or cycling to have messages read aloud without having to look at your Apple Watch or iPhone. Even more important is the ability to take photos and videos using voice commands or the touch of a button. This makes taking photos easy and safe without having to pull out your smartphone.
The two conditions for Apple Smart Glasses
A truly intelligent AI
One of Apple's biggest challenges will be taking artificial intelligence to a new level. Currently, Siri is the weakest AI assistant on the market. For Apple Smart Glasses to be useful, Siri needs to become significantly more powerful. Simply executing simple voice commands isn't enough. The glasses must be able to understand complex tasks and provide you with answers or solutions faster and easier than you can get from an iPhone. If that doesn't work, Apple Smart Glasses offer no real added value and will likely fail.
Camera for photos and videos
Another key feature is the ability to take photos and videos. According to Mark Gurman, Apple could remove this function due to privacy concerns. The reason is understandable: Smart glasses make it easier to take secret recordings. Nevertheless, it would be a big mistake to do without the camera. The ability to quickly and hands-free take pictures and videos is one of the core functions of smart glasses. Moreover, data protection has long been an issue with mobile devices. Today, you can't tell whether someone is using their iPhone to film or read a message. Smart glasses don't fundamentally change that. Without a camera, Apple Smart Glasses are missing a key function. Especially when you're on the go or exercising, it's extremely practical to be able to take photos or videos without having to have one hand free. Apple will have to find a way to offer this function without compromising its privacy principles. Clear labeling when recording is active could be one solution.
These two features determine the success of Apple glasses
For Apple, it will be crucial to meet these two requirements with its smart glasses: a truly intelligent, everyday-useful Siri, and integrated photo and video functionality. Both features are necessary for the glasses to offer more than just a combination of headphones and sunglasses. Whether Apple will master these challenges remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: If you expect Apple Smart Glasses to truly simplify your everyday life, you'll have to pay close attention to these two points.
