The AirTag, Apple's popular tracker for locating lost items, is getting a successor soon. With new technologies and improved features, the AirTag 2 promises to usher in the next generation of item tracking. When will the new model be launched, and what will it do differently or better? Here you can find out everything you need to know.

Since the launch of the first AirTag in 2021, Apple has shown how practical smart trackers can be. Whether it's keys, luggage or other valuables - with an AirTag you always have an eye on where your things are. But since then, technology has evolved and Apple is preparing to release the AirTag 2. Rumor has it that the new model will not only offer a greater range but will also improve security features and optimize integration into the Apple universe.

When will the AirTag 2 be released?

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that Apple plans to release the AirTag 2 in mid-2025. An exact announcement is currently expected by the end of June 2025. This would be four years after the launch of the original model - enough time for Apple to thoroughly develop the product.

What new features does the AirTag 2 bring?

Apple will equip the AirTag 2 with some significant improvements that set it apart from its predecessor:

  • New ultra-wideband technology: The AirTag 2 will be equipped with a second-generation ultra-wideband chip. This chip offers a range up to three times greater than its predecessor. While the current version of the AirTag is limited to around 10 - 30 meters, the new AirTag can cover 60 to 90 meters.
  • Improved security measures: A commonly criticized issue with the first AirTag was that the speaker could be easily removed, making stalking easier in some cases. Apple has reportedly taken this feedback seriously: The AirTag 2's speaker will be installed in such a way that it can no longer be easily removed. This makes the device more secure and harder to tamper with.

  • Integration with the Apple Vision Pro: Another point that is causing a stir among technology fans is the expected better integration of the AirTag 2 with the Apple Vision Pro. What exactly that means is not yet clear, but there may be new visual features for tracking that have been specifically developed for use in the Vision Pro glasses.

design and battery

When it comes to design, Apple remains true to its simple and functional style. No major changes are expected and the battery will remain a replaceable button cell, just like its predecessor. Apple is therefore continuing to focus on a simple solution that is practical and user-friendly.

Price and availability

The current AirTag costs €39 in Germany for a single piece or €129 for a pack of four. Whether Apple will adjust the price of the AirTag 2 is not yet known. However, it is likely that it will remain one of the more affordable products in Apple's portfolio. Anyone considering an AirTag 2 should also look for deals, as Apple products are often available at lower prices on Amazon.

An upgrade that's worth it: The AirTag 2 at a glance

The AirTag 2 could be the next big step in smart tracking. With a significantly longer range, improved security measures, and new features like integration with the Vision Pro, Apple aims to make it even more convenient and secure. If you're already a fan of the original AirTag or are considering buying a tracker for your valuables, it's worth waiting for the announcement of the AirTag 2. This way, you'll stay up to date with the latest technology and benefit from all the improvements. Looking for new accessories?
