iOS 13.2 – Apple updates support document for HomePod

Ostfildern, Germany - June 25, 2018: Installing an Apple HomePod speaker: The speaker is being configured using the settings of the iPhone being placed next to it.

Yesterday evening, Apple released a series of updates, including iOS 13.2, for all users. But the HomePod didn't get the update so well.

First of all – not every user is affected by the problem. In addition to the iPhone, Apple's smart speaker has finally been updated. But it has failed for some users. Those affected are reporting frozen devices in various forums. These HomePods are now unusable. According to users on Reddit, Twitter and Co., only a rotating light - red or white - is displayed on the top of the speaker. In both cases, the HomePod is said to be beyond repair - a hard reset was unsuccessful. As a result, Apple has withdrawn the update for the Siri speaker - a new version should be released soon.

How to prevent the technical KO of the HomePod

Now the cause of the total failure is also known. After the update, some users reset the HomePod to factory settings or removed the device from the Home app because it was not responding. But that is exactly what leads to a technical KO - according to Apple. In response to the problem, Apple has published its own support document called "Reset HomePod” and points out that users who have updated their HomePod to iOS 13.2 should not follow the steps under any circumstances. The instructions state the following:

"If your HomePod isn't responding, unplug it from the power source and then plug it back in. You should only reset HomePod if:

  • HomePod doesn't respond after a restart.
  • You want to reset the HomePod to factory settings.
  • You must send your HomePod in for service.
  • You want to sell or give away your HomePod.”

But now Apple has expanded the instructions as already mentioned The company writes:

"If your HomePod is running iOS 13.2, do not follow these steps. If you've already reset your HomePod or removed it from the Home app, contact Apple Support."

The only way out for those affected is to contact Apple and make an appointment at the Genius Bar. Alternatively, the HomePod can also be sent in. The repair procedure is currently unknown - the device may even be replaced free of charge. It is not yet known whether authorized service partners are also able to carry out repairs.
