Mac Pro discontinued: Apple confirms final demise

The Mac Pro is history. Apple has confirmed that the device is being discontinued and will be removed from its website. It's also confirmed that there will be no new Mac Pro hardware in the future. This marks the end of a product line that, for many years, was synonymous with Apple's most powerful desktop Mac.

The decision isn't entirely unexpected. It's been apparent for some time that Apple is reorganizing its focus within the Mac family. Now this has become a clear direction: the Mac Pro is being phased out, and the Mac Studio is taking over the role of the professional desktop Mac.

Over the years, the Mac Pro became more than just a computer for many. The device represented maximum performance, professional demands, and a specific niche within the Apple ecosystem. At the same time, Apple's hardware strategy changed dramatically with the transition to Apple Silicon. It was precisely within this transformation that the Mac Pro became increasingly difficult to categorize.

With this decision, Apple is drawing a line under the past. The move seems logical, as the Mac Pro had become increasingly difficult to justify both technically and in terms of price. At the same time, Apple already has the Mac Studio in its product line, which clearly outlines the future of the professional desktop.

Apple discontinues the Mac Pro

Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that the Mac Pro is being discontinued. The model was removed from Apple's website on Thursday. The former "Buy" page for the Mac Pro now redirects to the general Mac homepage.

Even more important is the second confirmation: Apple has also stated that there are no plans for future Mac Pro hardware. This is therefore not a temporary pause or a quiet transition phase, but the definitive end of the product line.

The end of a long development

The Mac Pro has undergone several changes over the years. Apple launched the current industrial design of the Mac Pro in 2019. The Pro Display XDR was also released at the same time, but it too was discontinued earlier this month.

The 2019 version of the Mac Pro initially used Intel processors. In June 2023, Apple updated the device with the M2 Ultra chip. However, no further updates followed. Since then, the Mac Pro has remained unchanged in the product lineup and has continued to be sold at a price of €8,299.

It was precisely at this point that the problem became increasingly apparent. Apple had already introduced the M3 Ultra chip in the Mac Studio last year, while the Mac Pro continued to rely on the older M2 Ultra. Such an expensive device without a current-generation chip seemed increasingly out of place.

Mac Studio is the future of the pro desktop

If you look at Apple's current lineup, it becomes pretty clear how the company sees the future: not the Mac Pro, but the Mac Studio is the professional desktop Mac that Apple is focusing on.

The Mac Studio can be configured with the M3 Ultra processor. This includes a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, up to 256 GB of unified memory, and up to 16 TB of SSD storage. This clearly positions the device as a high-performance professional solution within Apple's product line.

Against this backdrop, the discontinuation of the Mac Pro almost seems like the final formal step in a development that had already begun some time ago. The role that the Mac Pro once held has now effectively been transferred to the Mac Studio.

Apple's current Mac product range after the discontinuation of the Mac Pro

With the discontinuation of the Mac Pro, Apple now sells only three desktop Macs:

  • 24-inch iMac with M4: The iMac remains the all-in-one solution in the desktop sector and is aimed at users who are looking for an integrated system.
  • Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro: The Mac mini covers the compact desktop segment, offering both a more affordable entry-level configuration and more power with the M4 Pro.
  • Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra: The Mac Studio is now clearly the high-end desktop solution for professional needs.

In addition, there are three laptops in the product range:

  • MacBook Neo: The MacBook Neo expands the entry-level range and makes the Mac family wider at the lower end.
  • MacBook Air: The MacBook Air remains the familiar option for mobile users who want a lightweight and versatile device.
  • MacBook Pro: The MacBook Pro continues to cover the high-performance notebook segment.

Overall, this results in a very broad Mac product range. It spans significantly different price points, configurations, and form factors. The inclusion of the MacBook Neo in the entry-level segment, in particular, makes the portfolio, according to the report, stronger than it has been in years, perhaps even stronger than ever before.

Another factor: macOS Tahoe 26.2 and RDMA over Thunderbolt 5

An important point in the discussion surrounding the Mac Pro is also the software and platform aspect. With macOS Tahoe 26.2 last year, Apple introduced a new low-latency feature. This allows the use of RDMA over Thunderbolt 5 to connect multiple Macs.

For users in the ultra-high-end segment, this opens up an additional way to scale performance. Instead of concentrating everything on a single, extremely expensive device like the Mac Pro, computing power can now be organized across multiple Macs.

Even back then, there was speculation that this very feature could be another nail in the coffin for the Mac Pro. In retrospect, this assessment doesn't seem exaggerated.

Why Apple had to make a decision

In the end, Apple faced a clear decision: either update the Mac Pro or discontinue it. Continuing to offer it with the M2 Ultra at such a high price was hardly fair to Mac buyers.

That's precisely why the move seems logical. Apple has decided not to artificially continue the Mac Pro, but to clearly prioritize the Mac Studio going forward. Within the current product strategy, this fits much better than an expensive desktop that is already technically inferior to another of its own professional machines.

Disappointment among Mac Pro loyalists is still likely

Despite the logic behind the decision, there will undoubtedly be users disappointed by the end of the Mac Pro. Long-time fans of the series and users who have a strong connection to the Mac Pro name will especially not welcome this news.

Nevertheless, the signs had been pointing to its demise for some time. The lack of an update, the unchanged price, the stronger focus on the Mac Studio, and new possibilities for performance scaling across multiple Macs had been indicating for a while that the Mac Pro no longer had a real future in Apple's hardware plans.

Mac Pro discontinued: Apple finally draws the line under it

With the end of the Mac Pro, Apple closes an important chapter in its own Mac history. Not only is the discontinuation of the device officially confirmed, but also the end of all future Mac Pro hardware. This makes it clear that Apple sees the future of its professional desktop offerings in the Mac Studio.

For some, this marks the end of an era. From the perspective of Apple's current product strategy, however, it's an understandable decision. The Mac Pro no longer had a clear place in the lineup. The Mac Studio had long been more strongly positioned, more modernly equipped, and clearly the more sensible direction for Apple. (Image: Shutterstock / YnetteT)
