Apple's original film "F1" won the Academy Award for Best Sound at the 98th Academy Awards. This accolade from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is the latest award for the racing film, which had already garnered attention with a record-breaking theatrical release, making it the highest-grossing sports film of all time.
Following its successful theatrical release, the film is now available worldwide on Apple TV, expanding its range of award-winning original productions.
The Oscar win is part of a long list of international accolades for "F1". The film received a total of four Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture.
The film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski. Additionally, the National Board of Review selected it as one of the top 10 films of 2025.
Other awards and nominations
Besides the Oscar, "F1" won numerous other important awards. These include:
- two Critics' Choice Awards for best editing and best sound
- the BAFTA Film Award 2026 for Best Sound
- Cinema Audio Society Awards
- Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards
- Honors from the British Film Designers Guild Awards
- Awards from the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA)
- Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Awards
In addition, the film received nominations at many other award ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, the SAG-AFTRA Actor Awards, the Producers Guild of America Awards, the Costume Designers Guild Awards, the Art Directors Guild Awards, the ACE Eddie Awards, the Casting Society's Artios Awards, the Grammy Awards, the Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards, and the NAACP Image Awards.
Plot of the film
The story centers on Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt). In the 1990s, he was considered a great talent in Formula 1, until a serious accident almost ended his career.
Thirty years later, he lives as a racing driver on standby until his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) contacts him. Cervantes owns a Formula 1 team on the verge of collapse and persuades Sonny to return to Formula 1.
There, Sonny drives alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), a talented young driver. As the races become more intense, it becomes clear that in motorsport, your teammate is often your biggest competitor, and the road to redemption cannot be traveled alone.
