With iOS 26.4 Beta 2, Apple significantly expands the testing capabilities for encrypted RCS messages. While the first beta version only allowed secure testing of messages between iPhones, the current beta now also supports end-to-end encryption for exchanges between iPhone and Android devices. This represents another step towards secure, cross-platform communication. It's still a test feature, but the direction is clear.
Apple first introduced RCS to the iPhone with iOS 18.1. Since then, features like typing indicators and read receipts have also been available in messaging between iPhone and Android users. This was a significant improvement over traditional SMS.
In March of last year, Apple announced its intention to support end-to-end encryption for RCS messages. With iOS 26.4 Beta 2, this plan is now being implemented – initially only for testing purposes.
Important: RCS end-to-end encryption is not part of the final version of iOS 26.4. Apple is making the feature available exclusively within the beta and plans to officially introduce it in a later iOS 26 update.
Enhanced RCS encryption in iOS 26.4 Beta 2
When iOS 26.4 Beta 1 was released, it already included initial support for testing RCS encryption. However, this was limited to messages between iPhones.
iOS 26.4 Beta 2 expands support. Encrypted RCS messages can now also be tested between iPhone and Android devices. This is the key new feature of this beta version.
The rollout is gradual. Not every iPhone user with Beta 2 installed will automatically receive access to the feature. Furthermore, other requirements must be met:
- Android users must use the latest beta version of the Google Messages app.
- Availability also depends on the respective mobile network provider.
Encrypted communication between the devices is only available once all conditions have been met.
Activating the feature under iOS 26.4
After updating to iOS 26.4 Beta 2, you can check if the new test feature is available. The corresponding menu item is located under:
- Settings > Messages > RCS Messages
The new option "End-to-end encryption (Beta)" will appear there. This is enabled by default. If the feature has been activated for your device and provider, no further configuration is usually necessary.
User interface adjustments
With iOS 26.4, Apple also visually updated the Messages app. When a message is sent with RCS end-to-end encryption enabled, a new lock icon appears in the respective chat thread. This indicates that the conversation is encrypted.
Android users will see the same lock symbol in their message threads, provided the requirements are met.
Additionally, this lock icon is also displayed in iMessage threads. iMessage has supported end-to-end encryption since 2011. This ensures a consistent visual representation of encrypted conversations within the messaging app.
Classification within the context of the RCS strategy
With the introduction of RCS support in iOS 18.1, Apple began to gradually replace classic SMS with modern messaging features. Typing indicators, read receipts, and improved media transfer were the first visible steps.
The integration of end-to-end encryption now represents the next stage of development. Even though the feature is currently only included in iOS 26.4 for testing purposes, it clearly shows that Apple intends to make cross-platform communication more secure in the long term.
Apple has confirmed that the full implementation of RCS end-to-end encryption will take place in a future iOS 26 update.
iOS 26.4 lays the foundation for secure cross-platform chats
iOS 26.4 Beta 2 doesn't bring a fundamental overhaul, but it does offer an important technical advancement. The ability to test encrypted RCS messages between iPhone and Android devices closes a previously existing security gap in cross-platform messaging.
The feature is still in beta and depends on the provider and app version. Nevertheless, one thing is clear: iOS 26.4 lays the foundation for future standard encrypted RCS communication between iOS and Android.
