The same question keeps coming up regarding Apple's AirPods: When will the next models be released, and what will actually change? Several updates are expected in 2026 and 2027, although not every product line will be updated immediately. The planned AirPods Pro 3 in a higher-end version are particularly exciting, as are the long-awaited AirPods Max 2 and the next generation of standard AirPods, the AirPods 5.
Apple is now clearly pursuing a tiered strategy with its AirPods: not just "one model for everyone", but rather variants in different price and feature categories. This was already evident with the AirPods 4, which offered a more affordable option and a premium model with active noise cancellation (ANC). This same principle is set to be repeated with the new version of the AirPods Pro 3, this time with a significantly more pronounced focus on AI features.
AirPods Pro 3 with cameras: Apple's next step towards AI
Expected start date: Autumn 2026
The AirPods Pro are currently the most recently updated AirPods model. Nevertheless, they are considered the next candidate for new hardware because Apple is reportedly planning a second, higher-end version, the AirPods Pro 3, later this year. Here's what the rumors say:
- The new AirPods Pro 3 are expected to look almost identical to the current model.
- The major difference is said to lie in infrared cameras.
- These cameras are intended to enable AI functions.
Price and positioning:
- Expected price: approximately US$299 or €299.
- That would be around 50 euros more than for the standard AirPods Pro 3.
Classification within Apple's model strategy:
This approach with two versions is reminiscent of Apple's approach with the AirPods 4:
- A cheaper option for 149 euros
- Premium model with ANC for 199 euros
Ultimately, this suggests a pattern: Apple releases a basic version and then places a more expensive version with clear additional features on top of it.
AirPods Max 2: a real hardware update, but later than hoped
Expected start date: 2027
Many have been waiting a long time for a true "2.0" update to the AirPods Max. Before the Apple event in fall 2024, expectations for the AirPods Max 2 were high. However, instead of a complete generational leap, only the following arrived:
- a USB-C upgrade
- new colors
What is now expected for 2027:
- AirPods Max 2 are expected to launch in 2027 (according to recent reports).
- They are supposed to be lighter than the first model.
- A more modern H-class processor is expected, possibly an H3.
Even with an H2 chip, the AirPods Max 2 should get many of the features currently available in the AirPods Pro and AirPods 4. However, there's still hope that Apple will deliver a more significant update than just a chip swap.
AirPods 5: Next standard generation following Apple's rhythm
Expected start date: 2027
There aren't many concrete details about the AirPods 5 yet. However, the update history of the standard AirPods provides a good indication. Previous AirPods updates:
- AirPods: 2016
- AirPods 2: 2019
- AirPods 3: 2021
- AirPods 4: 2024
Apple typically releases "regular" AirPods roughly every three years. This makes 2027 a plausible target date for the AirPods 5. As Bloomberg has already indicated:
- Apple is actively working on AirPods 5.
- The discussion centers on an H3 chip and potential new health features.
The heart rate sensor, which is being discussed for the AirPods Pro 3, will not be included in the entry-level AirPods – at least not for now.
Apple AirPods: These models are on the roadmap until 2027
Three clear developments are emerging for the upcoming Apple AirPods. The AirPods Pro 3, a higher-end version, are expected to be released in autumn 2026. Visually, they will remain close to the current model, but will be equipped with infrared cameras for AI functions and are expected to cost around €299, which is about €50 more than the standard version.
The AirPods Max 2 are expected in 2027, following the interim update of 2024 which only brought USB-C and new colors. They are then expected to receive a real hardware upgrade, presumably becoming lighter and equipped with a new chip such as the H3 or at least the H2.
The AirPods 5 are also expected to be released in 2027, following the previous three-year release cycle, with indications of an H3 chip and potential health features, but initially without the heart rate sensor discussed for the Pro models.
