Apple has once again taken a stand on political and social issues. At a company-wide employee meeting, CEO Tim Cook announced that the company will actively lobby the US government on the issue of immigration. This comes in response to current political developments that, according to Apple's management, have both social and economic repercussions.
According to a Bloomberg report, Tim Cook spoke out clearly about the current US government's immigration policy at the internal meeting. He said he was "deeply dismayed" by the current course and pledged to personally ensure that this issue receives political attention.
The Importance of Immigration for Apple
In his speech, Cook made clear the role immigration plays for Apple. According to him, the company has always been more successful and innovative because it attracts talented professionals from all over the world. This international composition of the workforce has made Apple "smarter, more intelligent, and more innovative.".
Immigration is particularly relevant for Apple for very practical reasons. The company employs staff throughout the US who work with different types of visas. Restrictions or uncertainties in immigration policy could therefore have a direct impact on teams, projects, and long-term planning.
Political engagement and support of DACA
Tim Cook emphasized that his commitment was not a short-term gesture. He intends to continue advocating to lawmakers for what he considers a fair and forward-looking immigration policy. In this context, he explicitly reaffirmed his support for the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program, which grants certain young people with a migration background temporary protection from deportation and access to work permits.
Apple is thus further positioning itself as a company that openly addresses socio-political issues and links them to its own corporate values.
Response to events in Minneapolis
The previous month, Cook had already addressed current events in an internal memo. The occasion was the fatal incident in Minneapolis in which two people were killed by US immigration officials. The incidents had sparked public outrage nationwide.
In the memo, Cook stated that he was "devastated" by these events. At the same time, he called for de-escalation. He emphasized that America is strongest when it lives up to its highest ideals, treats every person with dignity and respect, and prioritizes shared humanity regardless of origin or identity. This stance, he added, is something Apple has always stood for.
Apple clearly positions itself between business and responsibility
Tim Cook's statements demonstrate that Apple views immigration as a central issue for its own future and for society as a whole. The company combines economic interests with clearly articulated values and signals its willingness to represent these values to political decision-makers. With this, Apple once again underscores that, from the perspective of its management, social responsibility is an integral part of its corporate strategy. (Image: Shutterstock / Laura Hutton)
