Apple is facing an exceptionally extensive iPhone rollout. A recent report from The Information reveals that Apple is simultaneously working on at least eight new iPhone models, slated for release in 2026 and 2027. These include standard updates, new Pro models, a foldable iPhone, and a radically redesigned anniversary device. The upcoming generations are expected not only to see technological advancements but also to introduce new design and hardware concepts.
In recent years, Apple has primarily focused on incremental improvements to the iPhone. However, the new report makes it clear that Apple is planning significantly larger changes in the medium term. New display technologies, different camera solutions, revised chip architectures, and a broader model range are the focus. Apple is pursuing several lines simultaneously, from affordable entry-level models to technically sophisticated premium and specialized devices.
Apple's iPhone roadmap in detail
iPhone 17e in spring 2026
The iPhone 17e will be the first to be released, reportedly in spring 2026. It is described as an incremental update to the iPhone 16e. A key new feature is Apple's new C1X modem.
The device also features a glass back that supports magnetic wireless charging. This is precisely the feature many missed in the iPhone 16e. While the current model supports Qi charging, it lacks magnetic charging.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in Fall 2026
Apple plans to release the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in fall 2026. Both models are expected to feature an under-display Face ID sensor for the first time. As previously reported, the front-facing camera will be moved to the upper left corner of the display.
Additionally, the Pro models will feature a mechanical aperture for at least one camera. This solution allows the use of a new camera sensor that captures more light in low-light conditions while simultaneously preventing overexposed photos in daylight.
The external design of the devices is expected to closely resemble that of the iPhone 17 Pro. Inside, Apple is using a new chip technology from TSMC. This technology places the memory chips closer to the main processor, which should have a positive impact on performance and efficiency.
iPhone Fold in Fall 2026
The iPhone Fold is also planned for fall 2026. When unfolded, it will have a 7.7-inch display with an aspect ratio similar to the iPad. When folded, the display measures 5.3 inches. According to reports, the device is wider than it is tall when unfolded.
A person involved in the project points out that the display sizes could still change before the market launch. During development and test production, Apple is struggling with a high error rate with the display. According to The Information, however, this is not unusual at this stage.
The selfie camera is located in the upper left corner of the display, right next to light, proximity and other sensors.
iPhone 18 in spring 2027
Apple is preparing the base model iPhone 18 for spring 2027. This model is also described as an incremental update. Among other things, Apple is removing haptic feedback and touch detection from the camera controls.
iPhone 18e in spring 2027
The iPhone 18e is expected to be released at the same time. Few details are known about this new budget model. The Information reports only that the device will support wireless charging, like its predecessor.
iPhone Air 2 in spring 2027
The iPhone Air 2 is also in development for spring 2027. Apple is reacting to the poor sales figures of the first iPhone Air model. According to reports, Apple has gone back to the drawing board.
The company is considering adding a second camera to the iPhone Air 2 and lowering the price to make the device more attractive.
iPhone 20 in Fall 2027
The roadmap concludes with the iPhone 20, which is slated for release in fall 2027. Bloomberg had previously reported on Apple's plans for a particularly bold design to mark the iPhone's 20th anniversary.
The Information now provides further details. The device is said to have a curved glass casing on the front and back, as well as along all four edges. This will allow for a screen without the usual black border around the display edges. Whether the display itself will be curved at the edges is still unclear.
Instead of a full metal frame, Apple is using a narrow metal band that runs around the center of the device's edge and houses the buttons. Additionally, Apple plans to place the selfie camera under the display. This would make it the first iPhone with a true edge-to-edge display without any notches.
