Apple and Google simplify switching between devices

Switching between iPhone and Android has long been possible, but never truly convenient. Two separate apps, different workflows, and numerous limitations often made the transition more complicated than necessary. Now, for the first time, Apple and Google are collaborating more closely to simplify this process. This is based on new features that are expected to appear in both Android and an upcoming iOS beta.

Previously, users faced several hurdles when switching platforms. Data had to be transferred via separate apps, and not everything could be reliably migrated. At the same time, pressure is growing from regulatory authorities worldwide, who want to ensure that users can switch between ecosystems more easily. The new collaboration between Apple and Google addresses precisely this issue and aims to make the transition between the two systems significantly smoother.

A joint solution for platform migration

According to a report by 9to5Google, a new Android Canary version was released today, containing the first hints of a simplified transfer method between two smartphones. This new method is said to be integrated directly into the setup process, eliminating the need for an additional app. Apple plans to introduce the same feature in an upcoming beta version of iOS 26.

Until now, there were two separate tools: the Move to iOS app for transferring data from Android to an iPhone, and Google's Android Switch app for transferring content from an iPhone to an Android device. Both tools served their purpose, but had clear limitations. Not all data types could be transferred, and the process was cumbersome for many.

What will change with the new method

The new solution is designed to completely replace both apps. Instead of external tools, data transfer will be offered directly when setting up a new device. This means fewer steps, a clearer structure, and potentially fewer errors. Furthermore, the new method will support more data types that previously could not be transferred. These include certain app data or content that could previously only be transferred manually or not at all.

If both systems have integrated the function, a unified way for switching platforms is created: simply connect two smartphones, follow the instructions and transfer most of the data without a separate app download.

Why Apple and Google are cooperating

This collaboration is no coincidence. Both companies are facing global regulatory pressure. Authorities are investigating whether technical hurdles unnecessarily bind users to a particular system. A simplified and more comprehensive switching option addresses these concerns. At the same time, both Apple and Google can benefit from easier access to each other's systems. A straightforward data migration lowers the barrier for users wishing to switch, thereby increasing the competitiveness of both platforms.

Apple & Google: Future outlook on a simpler platform switch

The planned feature may seem like a minor technical step at first glance, but it could have a significant long-term impact. A simple and seamless migration between iPhone and Android will alleviate many users' concerns about data loss and reduce obstacles that have previously deterred switching. If Apple and Google integrate the new solution as planned, the process will be considerably more transparent and user-friendly. This will bring a more open smartphone market closer, where switching platforms is no longer hindered by the effort involved. (Image: Shutterstock / Styke Pictures)
