The new group chats in ChatGPT are now available worldwide. This provides an easy way for multiple people to collaborate in a shared space using ChatGPT. After a short testing phase with a small group of users, OpenAI rolled out the feature to everyone faster than planned.
The introduction of group chats demonstrates the significant increase in demand for collaborative AI use. Early feedback was so positive that OpenAI moved up the global launch. The goal is to facilitate seamless collaboration, allowing you to pool information, plan projects, and coordinate ideas without losing track of everything.
What the new group chat function offers
ChatGPT's group chats create a separate space from the private chat area. Personal ChatGPT storage remains protected and is not shared. A group chat can be used to plan a weekend trip, organize a gardening project, coordinate design ideas, or find a restaurant that everyone likes. The feature is also useful for school or work projects, especially when articles, notes, and questions need to be collected in one place.

Here's how to create a group chat
Creating a group chat is easy. Simply tap the person icon in the upper right corner of a new or existing chat. Then, share an invitation link. Anyone with the link can invite others. Up to 20 participants are possible.
A clearly defined area appears in the sidebar where all group chats are collected. The personal chat history remains separate.
How ChatGPT behaves in group chats
OpenAI has adapted ChatGPT for group chats. The AI follows the flow of the conversation and decides, based on the context, when a response is appropriate and when it isn't. If ChatGPT is mentioned directly, it responds accordingly. It can also reply with emojis when appropriate to the situation. These adjustments are intended to ensure that ChatGPT doesn't dominate but rather integrates seamlessly into the group conversation.
Availability and outlook
The group chat feature is available to all registered users of the Go, Plus, and Pro plans. OpenAI plans further improvements as more people use the feature in their daily lives and provide feedback.
ChatGPT and group chats: More overview and better collaboration
With the new group chats, ChatGPT significantly expands its usefulness. Collaborative planning, research, and coordination can be more easily coordinated. The clear separation between private and group chats ensures clarity. ChatGPT's adaptive social behaviors make collaboration more pleasant. Since OpenAI has already announced further optimizations, the feature will become even more flexible and practical in the future. (Image: Shutterstock / Diego Thomazini)
