iPhone 18 Pro: Apple redesigns back and materials

According to recent leaks, the iPhone 18 Pro is set to receive a redesigned look. If the information from a well-known Chinese leaker is accurate, Apple will be abandoning the two-tone back design introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro for the upcoming Pro models. Instead, the company is reportedly opting for a more uniform appearance that better suits Apple's signature minimalist style.

With each new iPhone generation, Apple not only refines the technology but also makes small, often subtle design changes. The iPhone 17 Pro was the first to feature a slightly two-tone effect on the back due to the MagSafe cutout. While this combination of aluminum frame and Ceramic Shield 2 created an interesting contrast, it deviated from the otherwise uniform look of the Pro models. This very detail could disappear with the iPhone 18 Pro.

New manufacturing process for the reverse side

According to leaker Instant Digital, who spreads his information via the Chinese platform Weibo , Apple has revised the production process for the back of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series. The so-called "replacement process" for the glass is said to have been adjusted to significantly reduce the color difference between the glass surface and the aluminum frame. The result would be a more harmonious look, with the back and frame appearing almost identical in color.

The iPhone 17 Pro has a visible contrast between the glass cutout required for MagSafe charging and the rest of the back. With the new process, Apple apparently aims to make this difference virtually imperceptible. This could allow the iPhone 18 Pro to have a smooth, flowing design – similar to previous models, but with more advanced manufacturing techniques.

Ceramic Shield with transparent effect

The rumor about the redesigned glass fits with an earlier report from another well-known leaker. Digital Chat Station reported back in September that the iPhone 18 Pro's Ceramic Shield would have a "slightly transparent design." This information could indicate that Apple is working on a glass surface that creates more visual depth and thus appears more premium, without altering the fundamental design.

Both sources mention subtle but effective design adjustments. While Instant Digital points to improved color matching, Digital Chat Station suggests a new material finish. Together, the leaks paint a picture of an iPhone that remains technically almost identical to its predecessor, but with a more refined visual finish.

Credibility of the sources

Instant Digital is no stranger to Apple rumors. The leaker has been correct several times in the past – including regarding the yellow color variant of the iPhone 14 and the titanium Milanese Loop for the Apple Watch Ultra 2. However, it's worth noting that not every prediction from this account has come true. This time, too, it remains to be seen whether Apple will actually implement these design changes or whether they are simply early prototype details.

Technical innovations in the iPhone 18 Pro

In addition to the design changes, technical information about the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is also circulating. According to recent reports, both models will be equipped with the new A20 Pro chip, which is based on TSMC's latest 2nm process. This manufacturing process is expected to provide better energy efficiency and higher performance.

Furthermore, Apple is expected to use its own C2 modem for the first time in the iPhone 18 Pro. This would represent another step towards the manufacturer's independence from Qualcomm. The new modem could offer advantages in terms of energy consumption and connection speed.

The release of the iPhone 18 Pro series is expected in September 2026 – along with Apple's first foldable iPhone, which is reportedly to be unveiled at the same time.

Apple focuses on harmony and high-tech with the iPhone 18 Pro.

According to recent leaks, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to feature a more visually unified design and smoother material transitions. Apple could thus reverse one of the most striking changes of the iPhone 17 Pro – the two-tone back. At the same time, the new 2nm chip and the in-house C2 modem also suggest technical improvements. Whether this information is accurate remains to be seen, but the iPhone 18 Pro could once again demonstrate Apple's precise integration of design and technology. (Image: Shutterstock / JA Dunbar)
