Threads introduces ghost posts – posts that disappear

Threads is expanding its functionality with a feature that enables short-lived content. Meta has announced that the social network now supports so-called "ghost posts" – posts that automatically disappear after 24 hours. Threads is thus taking a trend already familiar from stories or disappearing messages and applying it to text-based content.

Threads, Meta's platform, which positions itself as a text-oriented alternative to X (formerly Twitter), is constantly evolving. Since its launch, the network has emphasized open conversations and spontaneous thoughts. With the introduction of ghost posts, Meta is responding to the need many users have to share thoughts without them being permanently visible. The new format is intended to help people post more freely and informally – without pressure, perfection, or lasting traces.

Ghost Posts – Posts with an expiration date

Ghost posts are threaded posts that are automatically archived after 24 hours. They disappear from the public feed and remain visible for only a limited time. The goal is to give users more freedom when posting and lower the barrier to spontaneous or incomplete thoughts.

To create such a post, there's now a new ghost icon in the creation window. Once activated, the post is marked as a ghost post. After 24 hours, it's automatically removed without the user having to do anything.

How ghost posts are displayed

Ghost posts appear in the feed in a gray chat bubble design, visually distinguishing them from regular posts. This is intended to make it clear at first glance that the content is only visible temporarily.

Interactions with ghost posts

Interactions with these posts are different than with regular posts. Comments or likes are not publicly visible. Instead, replies are delivered directly as a message in the author's inbox. This creates a kind of private communication channel where feedback remains discreet. Meta emphasizes that this is intended to encourage more open and honest communication because the public rating system based on likes and comments is eliminated.

Meta's reasoning for the new feature

Meta describes ghost posts as a way to share "unfiltered thoughts and fresh perspectives without the pressure of permanence or perfection." The company is responding to the trend toward making social networks more personal and less performative. While many platforms focus on permanent visibility, Threads emphasizes spontaneous and authentic content with this feature.

Ghost posts are designed to allow users to express themselves more freely—without having to worry about how a post will be perceived in the long run or whether it's "good enough." The format creates a space for experiments, snatches of thought, and honest expressions of opinion.

Availability and purpose of the innovation

According to Meta, the new feature is now available on threads. Users can enable ghost posts directly in the creation window. The update is being rolled out worldwide, so the feature should gradually become available to all accounts.

With this new feature, Meta aims to make Threads a platform where conversations develop more naturally – less curated, less concerned with impact, and more focused on genuine exchange.

Threads: Ghost Posts Change Social Media Dynamics

With Ghost Posts, Threads is taking another step toward casual and authentic online communication. The ability to automatically delete posts after 24 hours is changing the way we interact with content: spontaneous thoughts instead of permanent posts, private replies instead of public discussions. The new feature underscores Meta's attempt to establish Threads as an alternative to traditional social media platforms – a place where sharing ideas is more important than reach or permanence.
