Apple Watch receives FDA approval for high blood pressure warning

The Apple Watch is adding a new health feature: high blood pressure alerts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially approved the feature. This makes the smartwatch more relevant not only as a fitness gadget but also as a tool for the early detection of a widespread disease.

High blood pressure is one of the biggest health risk factors worldwide. The problem: The disease often goes undetected for a long time, but can lead to serious consequences such as heart attacks, strokes, or kidney damage. Apple has been working for years to equip the Apple Watch with features that go far beyond traditional tracking. With the new high blood pressure alerts, the company is taking another step toward preventative healthcare.

Introduction and availability

The feature was introduced alongside the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. At the time, FDA approval was expected "shortly." This has now been officially granted. Starting next week, the feature will be rolled out in over 150 countries and regions, including the United States, the European Union, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.

Supported models

Not only the latest models are compatible. In addition to the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, the Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 also benefit from the new health feature, reaching a broad user base.

How it works

High blood pressure alerts are based on data from the optical heart sensor. This analyzes how blood vessels respond to heartbeats. An algorithm works passively in the background, collecting data over 30 days. If consistent signs of high blood pressure are detected, the Apple Watch issues a notification. This feature isn't a formal screening tool and isn't a substitute for a medical diagnosis. However, it does provide clues that can lead to further evaluation and, if necessary, behavioral changes or medical treatment. Apple emphasizes that not everyone with high blood pressure receives a notification.

Results and accuracy

In tests, the feature achieved a specificity of 95.3% in the "Normal" category. This means that even people without a formal diagnosis can be alerted to abnormal values. This is intended to help raise awareness of the risks of high blood pressure. Apple estimates that within the first year, more than one million people with previously undiagnosed hypertension will be alerted through the notifications.

Importance for health care

High blood pressure affects nearly half of all adults worldwide. Because symptoms often go unnoticed, the disease frequently goes undetected until it causes serious damage. Integrating this warning feature into the Apple Watch could help provide timely intervention, giving users the opportunity to seek medical advice before serious complications develop.

Apple Watch becomes an early warning system for risks

With FDA approval, Apple is bringing a feature to the Apple Watch that goes beyond fitness tracking and has real relevance for preventative healthcare. High blood pressure warnings could help alert millions of people to an often unrecognized risk early on. The smartwatch is thus becoming more than ever a companion in everyday life, not only tracking activity but also providing potentially life-saving information.
