Apple has introduced a new MagSafe battery pack. But unlike previous versions, this time the accessory doesn't offer more flexibility, but rather causes confusion. Users of an iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Pro cannot use the new battery pack. Instead, it's designed exclusively for the iPhone Air.
With the introduction of the MagSafe system, Apple has added a practical option to wireless charging iPhones. Accessories such as chargers or power banks can be magnetically attached to the back, expanding everyday use. The previous MagSafe battery pack was compatible across several generations and was long considered a versatile solution. However, with its successor, Apple is taking a new approach.
An accessory only for the iPhone Air
The new MagSafe battery pack costs €115 and is officially available at the Apple Store. While the price is within the usual range, compatibility is significantly limited. The battery pack connects only to the iPhone Air. Models like the iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Pro are not supported. This decision is not arbitrary. The unusual design of the battery pack means that it would interfere with the camera systems of other iPhones when attached. The larger camera units of the iPhone 17, in particular, prevent a clean connection.
Differences to the old MagSafe battery
This approach is surprising because the previous MagSafe battery pack had a much broader range. It could be used across multiple iPhone generations and was only discontinued in 2023. This made it a flexible solution for anyone who needed extra power while traveling or on the go. The new battery breaks with this tradition and only fits a single model. This limitation demonstrates Apple's strong focus on the new iPhone Air.
Technical background
The iPhone Air stands out significantly from the iPhone 17 series. It's only 5.6 millimeters thin and has a comparatively small internal battery of 3,149 mAh. This combination makes an external battery pack particularly useful. The MagSafe design of the new battery is precisely based on this slim profile. This makes it functional for the iPhone Air—but simultaneously unusable for other models.
Impact on iPhone 17 users
For owners of an iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Pro, this means that an official Apple battery pack is currently unavailable. Those who still want to use the MagSafe standard will have to look to third-party suppliers. Compatible products that also work with the current iPhone generation are still available.
Apple prioritizes the iPhone Air
With the new MagSafe battery pack, Apple demonstrates that accessories don't necessarily have to be designed for all models. While the iPhone Air comes with a dedicated battery, iPhone 17 users are left out. Whether Apple will offer a universal battery pack again in the future remains to be seen. What is clear is that for many, looking for third-party alternatives is the only viable option. (Image: Apple)
