The iPhone Air expands Apple's smartphone lineup with a model that emphasizes lightness and energy efficiency. Before the launch, rumors suggested the iPhone would use the familiar C1 modem, first installed in the iPhone 16e. Instead, Apple is using a new chip in the iPhone Air: the C1X modem.
The iPhone Air is the first model to feature the C1X 5G modem, which offers significantly faster speeds and improved battery life compared to previous chips. While it doesn't support mmWave, the iPhone Air clearly positions itself as an energy-efficient smartphone with strong 5G performance in the sub-6GHz range.
The new C1X modem
At the heart of the iPhone Air is the C1X chip, which, according to Apple, is up to twice as fast as the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e. Despite its higher speed, the chip consumes around 30 percent less energy. This makes the C1X the most energy-efficient modem ever installed in an iPhone. A comparison with the Qualcomm modem in the iPhone 16 Pro is interesting. Here, too, the C1X is said to be faster, but this speed advantage only applies to 5G connections below 6 GHz.
No mmWave support
While energy efficiency increases, the iPhone Air remains limited to sub-6GHz 5G bands. mmWave, the extremely fast but also extremely limited 5G signal, is not supported. Sub-6GHz, on the other hand, is more widespread and provides more stable network coverage, even outside of major cities. This makes the iPhone Air suitable for everyday use, even if it lacks the top speeds of mmWave.
Comparison with iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e
The iPhone Air not only impresses with its new modem, but also with its longer battery life. When streaming video, the device achieves up to 27 hours. By comparison, the iPhone 16e with a C1 modem lasts a maximum of 26 hours. Even compared to the iPhone 16, the iPhone Air offers a longer battery life thanks to its more efficient chip, despite its smaller size.
Sub-6GHz as standard
With the iPhone Air, Apple remains true to its tradition of using sub-6 GHz as its primary 5G technology. This technology is more widely used worldwide, more reliably available, and sufficient for most everyday scenarios. While mmWave theoretically delivers higher speeds, its coverage is so limited that foregoing it doesn't result in any noticeable disadvantages in many regions.
