AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 get live translation feature

Apple has unveiled the AirPods Pro 3, highlighting a feature that's making people sit up and take notice: Live Translation. But contrary to initial assumptions, this feature isn't exclusive to the latest model. The AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation will also be able to use it via a software update. This makes Apple's translation technology available to a wider audience – with certain limitations.

Live Translation is another step in Apple's strategy to overcome language barriers with modern technology. The feature is designed to make conversations understandable in real time via the AirPods. However, it doesn't run entirely on the headphones themselves; it requires a compatible iPhone and the latest software. Therefore, anyone wanting to use the feature must observe a few requirements.

Live Translation: How the new Apple feature works

The translation function is activated via a special mode. To do this, press the stems of both AirPods simultaneously. The microphones then listen for foreign language statements and send the data to the connected iPhone. There, the actual translation takes place using Apple Intelligence. The results are played in real time through the headphones.

Conditions for use

Not every Apple device supports Live Translation. In addition to compatible AirPods, the correct iPhone generation is required.

  • Supported AirPods: AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation
  • Supported iPhones: iPhone 15 Pro or newer
  • Operating system: iOS 26 or higher

The translation is therefore closely linked to the hardware. Even owners of the AirPods Pro 3 cannot do without a current iPhone, as older models cannot provide the processing power for Apple Intelligence.

Language support at startup

Five languages are available at launch: English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. Apple has announced plans to add Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese later this year. This will gradually make the feature attractive to additional regions and user groups.

Communication even without AirPods on both sides

A conversation works even if only one person is wearing AirPods with the latest software. While the translation is played through the headphones, a text transcript appears on the iPhone display. This allows the other party to read the translated answers while the other party hears the translation directly. Apple thus closes the gap between spoken and written communication.

AirPods and iPhone as the key to live translation

Live Translation demonstrates how Apple combines hardware, software, and artificial intelligence. Thanks to the update, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 benefit, as do the new AirPods Pro 3. However, use remains tied to an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26. The feature is still limited in terms of language support at launch, but the planned expansion to additional languages makes it clear that Apple is thinking long-term. With this, Apple is not only expanding the features of its headphones but is also positioning itself more strongly in the area of real-time communication. Live Translation is a practical tool for travel, business conversations, and international encounters – provided you have the right Apple combination.
