Apple plans to launch a second foldable iPhone in 2027. This is reported by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a new report. He says that Apple is restructuring its iPhone roadmap through 2027. The iPhone Fold is expected to play a key role in this. According to Kuo, the first generation will be released as early as 2026, followed by the second model a year later.
Foldable smartphones are no longer a novelty, but Apple has so far held back. While Samsung and other manufacturers already have several generations on the market, Apple is apparently just observing the market. Now, there are increasing indications that Apple isn't just planning a foldable, but intends to launch two generations within a short period of time. This shows that Apple is serious.
First generation arrives in 2026
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to release its first foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026. He doesn't provide any technical details in his report, but he assumes it will be a larger model. There had already been speculation about a book-like design—a device that unfolds like the Galaxy Z Fold and can then be used at tablet size. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had previously stated that Apple was planning such a device for 2026. He also mentioned 2027 in connection with a new foldable iPhone, but without clarifying whether it would be the first or second generation. In an earlier report, Gurman had also described a book-like design (via Kuo's Blog).
Second generation planned for 2027
Kuo's latest analysis now provides more clarity. According to the report, the second generation of the iPhone Fold is planned for the second half of 2027. Apple apparently wants to adapt its model strategy and respond more quickly to market reactions. Apple typically allows more time between generations with new device classes. However, the goal here seems to be to gather feedback as early as possible and to develop the product in a targeted manner. Interestingly, 2027 isn't the only year scheduled for release for the second iPhone Fold. Mark Gurman also reports on a new iPhone Pro model that will place greater emphasis on glass as a central design element. Although he doesn't provide any details, this points to a major design offensive across the entire iPhone portfolio.

iPhone Fold becomes part of a new strategy
If the reports are correct, Apple is pursuing a new product strategy with the iPhone Fold: a standard market launch, rapid development, and combination with design changes in the classic iPhone lineup. This makes the iPhone Fold more than a niche product. It could develop into a permanent product line in the coming years. This means more choice for users—and a clear indication that Apple is preparing for a future with more variable form factors. (Image: Shutterstock / ra2 studio)
