USB-C instead of Lightning: Apple is planning an AirPods Pro 2 upgrade

Earlier this week, Apple released the final beta version of iOS 16.4 for developers and users of the public beta version. In the update, Apple added references to the new Beats Studio+ headphones and the new AirPods.

Now the well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has spoken out reported. In his opinion, the new AirPods referenced in this update are likely the USB-C version of the AirPods Pro 2. In a post on Twitter today, Kuo explained the clues in iOS 16.4:

I think it's probably the USB-C version of the AirPods Pro 2, which is expected to start shipping in mass quantities in Q2 or Q3. By the way, Apple doesn't seem to have any plans for USB-C versions of the AirPods 2 & 3 at the moment.

The AirPods, which iOS 16.4 refers, have the model number A3048 and the case model number A2968. In response to Kuo's tweet, some are wondering why, in addition to the new case model number, there is also a new model number for the AirPods themselves. As already extensively reported, Apple plans to switch the iPhone 15 series to USB-C in the fall.

In this context, the company will also likely switch most - but apparently not all - accessories to USB-C. This is not the first time Kuo has reported that future versions of the AirPods will use USB-C for charging. Last year, Kuo said that in addition to the iPhone, Apple's AirPods and other accessories will also switch to USB-C. This includes accessories such as the Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse for the Mac, as well as the MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone. Apple's decision to equip its products with USB-C is partly due to new legislation in the European Union. According to the regulations, companies have until December 28, 2024 to meet the requirements. The AirPods Pro are expected to be the first to switch to USB-C, with the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 following later. (Image: Apple)
