AirTag battery level indicator can no longer be found in Find My

AirTags battery indicator iOS 17

In iOS 15.6 and the latest iOS 16 beta, Apple seems to have removed the AirTag battery indicator in the Find My app, intentionally?

In previous iOS versions, a small battery icon, similar to the iPhone's battery status, appeared under the name and location of an AirTag when the AirTag card was opened in Find My. Even though the icon did not have a percentage, it gave an approximate indication of an AirTag's battery level. When the battery level was very low, the battery icon turned red and the user received a notification to replace the battery. In iOS 15.6, the notification is still sent to the user but the general battery icon is missing unless the battery level is very low. This appears to be a deliberate move by Apple, as the same notification was also removed from Find My in the latest macOS Monterey 12.5 and watchOS 8.7 updates.

AirTag battery level indicator: Will Apple reverse the change?

Apple has also published a updated support document on replacing AirTag batteries removed the reference to the battery symbol in Find My and suggests paying attention to the "low battery" warning on the AirTag card instead. The Dutch blog iCulture.nl, who first noticed the absence of the battery icon, suspects that Apple has removed it due to ongoing problems with the correct display of the icon. In some cases last year, the battery was displayed as empty, although this was by no means the case. Unless Apple reverses the change, users will no longer be able to check the battery status of their AirTags and will have to rely on being notified of a low battery when it's time to replace the battery.
