Keep an eye on your blood pressure: How the iPhone Health app helps

Blood pressure is one of the key health indicators when it comes to cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure often develops unnoticed and is often only recognized when symptoms already appear. Regular measurements and structured recording are therefore essential for assessing risks or monitoring existing hypertension. With the Health app on the iPhone, blood pressure can be easily recorded and presented in informative reports.

Systematic documentation of blood pressure readings significantly facilitates the assessment of hypertension risk. Regularly recording data not only allows you to identify changes more quickly but also easily share them with doctors. The Health app offers a built-in feature that allows you to save, log, and clearly analyze measurements. All you need is a current iPhone and a suitable blood pressure cuff.

Requirements for using the Health app

To record blood pressure via the Health app, an iPhone 11 or newer with the latest iOS version (iOS 26 or newer) is required. A blood pressure cuff is also required. Automatic cuffs for the upper arm are recommended, as they provide the most accurate measurements. When choosing the right cuff, the size is crucial. A cuff that is too small or too large will distort the readings. If your arm circumference is between two sizes, the larger size is generally the better choice. Professional associations provide recommendations for selection that should be followed. It is also worth investing in well-known brands and purchasing the device from a pharmacy, medical supply store, or reputable specialist retailer.

Setting up the blood pressure protocol

You can set up a blood pressure log in the Health app. To do this, open the app, select "Heart" under "Search," and tap "Get Started" under "Blood Pressure Log." Then, select the reason for logging:

  • Anyone who wants to learn more about their risk of high blood pressure can log morning and evening measurements over seven days. The data is then incorporated into a report that can be used for medical evaluation. If a log is set up following a notification of possible high blood pressure, this option is automatically enabled. Additionally, the option to schedule reminders appears.
  • Those who want to monitor existing hypertension should record daily measurements over a period of four weeks. This makes it easier to identify possible factors influencing blood pressure.

After the selection, a reminder for blood pressure measurement is set and the setup is completed with “Done”.

Entering blood pressure values

Blood pressure readings can be added manually. To do this, open the "Heart" section under "Search" in the Health app. In the "Blood Pressure" section, you'll find the option "Add Measurement." There, you can enter and save the date, time, and systolic and diastolic readings.

Overview and evaluation of the protocol

All stored values can be accessed in the "Blood Pressure" section. A protocol is considered complete when the required measurements are available:

  • The risk protocol consists of seven morning and seven evening measurements. If these are not completed within six months, the protocol closes automatically.
  • In the hypertension protocol, the recording ends after 28 days with daily measurements.

The Health app uses classifications from recognized professional societies for evaluation. These include the American Heart Association (AHA), the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) if a pregnancy is documented in the app. Upon completion, a report can be exported as a PDF. This file is particularly suitable for sharing the results with treating physicians.

Important information about the function

The blood pressure log is a standalone feature in the Health app. It doesn't affect the "High Blood Pressure Notification" feature. Even if you enter blood pressure values regularly, these notifications won't change.

Health app: reliably record and evaluate blood pressure values

Digitally documenting blood pressure readings via the Health app makes it easier to monitor and contributes to a better assessment of risks. It not only provides a precise overview of the progress but also supports medical care. Whether for risk assessment or long-term monitoring of hypertension: With the right cuff and a current iPhone, blood pressure can be reliably recorded and professionally analyzed.
