If you use AirPods, AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, you may have noticed that Apple regularly releases firmware updates. These updates improve performance, fix bugs and introduce new features. But how exactly does it work? Up until now, there was only vague information on this, but Apple has now clarified the matter and published step-by-step instructions on its support page. Here you can find out how to update the firmware of your AirPods and what you can do if the update doesn't work.

Firmware updates are essential to getting the most out of your AirPods. However, the update process hasn't really been self-explanatory until now. Many users didn't know if and when their AirPods would be up to date. With Apple's updated instructions, you can now initiate the update process yourself and make sure everything works smoothly.

How the firmware update works

Apple explains that firmware updates are deployed automatically when your AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of a WiFi-connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac. So the process runs mostly in the background. With the new Instructions you can initiate the update specifically.

Check requirements

Before you start the update, you need to make sure that a few basic requirements are met:

  • Your AirPods must be in the charging case.
  • Your iPhone, iPad or Mac should be connected to a Wi-Fi network.
  • The AirPods must be within Bluetooth range of the device.

step-by-step instructions

Apple described the process for a manual update as follows:

  • Place AirPods in the charging case: Place your AirPods in the charging case and close the lid.
  • Connect the charging case: Connect the charging case to a charger or USB port using a USB cable.
  • Wait 30 minutes: Leave your AirPods in the charging case for at least 30 minutes. During this time, the new firmware will be installed automatically.
  • Reconnect AirPods: Open the charging case lid and reconnect to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  • Check firmware version: You can check the current firmware version of your AirPods in your device's settings.

Troubleshooting if the update doesn't work

If the update does not occur, Apple offers the following steps:

  • Reset your AirPods by unpairing them and reconnecting them to your device.
  • Repeat the steps above after resetting your AirPods.

What has changed?

While the steps for the update were similar to those known, Apple has now clarified how charging via cable and waiting at least 30 minutes affect the process. These additional details will clear up any confusion and help you complete the update smoothly.

Why firmware updates are important

A firmware update is more than just a formality. It ensures that your Apple earbuds work optimally with your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Bugs are fixed, new functions are introduced and the sound or connection quality is improved. By updating your AirPods regularly, you ensure that they are always up to date with the latest technology.
