Apple will source modems for the upcoming iPhone 2023 lineup from Qualcomm and not use its own 5G modem as originally expected.
As analysts predicted, Qualcomm will continue to be Apple’s modem supplier – at least until the next iPhone series. According to Bloomberg Qualcomm has informed its investors that the company will continue to supply modems for the "vast majority" of iPhones released in 2023. Qualcomm had originally expected that the company would only have to supply 20% of the modems.
iPhone 2023: Qualcomm continues to supply 5G modems
Apple has been working on developing its own modem for its hardware for several years, hoping to gain more control over how the component works and reduce costs. However, it doesn't look like 2023 will be the year Apple makes the switch. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in January that Apple would miss its target. His supply chain analysis suggested that Apple's modem development "may have failed," leaving Qualcomm as the "exclusive supplier of 5G chips for the new iPhones in 2023."
