According to a new leak, iPadOS apps could become Quick Note-like floating windows instead of always opening in full screen mode – when a keyboard and trackpad are connected.
Since the iPad was introduced in 2010, every app has run in full screen mode. Since then, improvements like split view have been introduced, but all window management is in the hands of the user. Now, a new rumor suggests that could change.
Apple is developing an intelligent system for iPadOS. Apps will continue to open in full-screen mode but will automatically shrink when connected to the keyboard and trackpad. Internally, it's called "Apple Mixer." We don't know whether it will be included in iPadOS 16 or not; it's said to be exclusive to the M1 iPad.
New iPad feature could be presented at WWDC 2022
The leaker Majin Bu does not mention any further details, except that the feature is said to be known at Apple as "Apple Mixer." Until now, Majin Bu has been known more for hardware leaks, such as those related to the resizing of the Apple Watch Series 7. It's unknown whether an already open app would detect that the iPad is connected to a keyboard and then switch. Whether Apple will introduce the feature in iPadOS 16 remains to be seen—at least the leaker isn't sure. The next operating system generation will most likely be unveiled at WWDC 2022 in June.
