Apple is about to unveil macOS 15 and is planning significant changes to the controversial System Preferences app. These changes are intended to improve usability and mitigate criticism of the app.

The System Preferences app has frustrated many users since its redesign in macOS Ventura. Apple has tried to make the settings match the design of iOS and iPadOS, which has led to mixed reactions. Now, with macOS 15, Apple is reportedly promising further optimizations. But will these be enough to convince the critics?

The redesign of the System Settings app

According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple plans to reorganize the System Preferences app in macOS 15. Individual settings will be restructured according to priority and importance. For example, notification and sound settings will be moved further down, while general settings will be positioned closer to network settings. These changes are aimed at making the app more intuitive and user-friendly. However, the basic design of the app will remain largely unchanged. Apple continues to pursue the goal of unifying settings across all devices - iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Reasons for the changes

The main criticism of the current system settings is the difficult navigation and the lack of consistency with Apple mobile devices. The restructuring of the categories should make it easier for you to quickly find the settings you want. This is especially important for users who work on both Mac and iOS devices.

What does this mean for you?

If you're like many users and are unhappy with the current version of the System Preferences app, these changes in macOS 15 could be an improvement. The new organization of categories is designed to reduce frustration and help you work more efficiently. For users who are primarily familiar with the iPad or iPhone, adapting System Preferences to the mobile design will provide a smoother transition. This can be especially helpful if you often switch between different Apple devices.

My opinion

As someone who uses System Preferences on the Mac a lot, I can understand the need for these changes. Unifying settings across all platforms is an important step to improve the user experience. Still, it remains to be seen whether these restructurings will be enough to convince all the critics. It will be interesting to see what other details Apple will reveal at WWDC.

macOS 15: Focus on improvements to system settings

The planned changes to the System Preferences app in macOS 15 are a step in the right direction. Apple shows that they are listening to user feedback and are willing to make adjustments to improve usability. Whether these changes are enough to appease the critics remains to be seen. It remains to be hoped that the new version of the app will actually make everyday life easier for Mac users. Stay tuned for WWDC and the official announcements for macOS 15. We will certainly learn more about the new features and improvements. Until then, we can only hope that the changes in System Preferences actually have the desired effect and improve the user experience on the Mac. (Photo by Fascinadora / Bigstockphoto)
