According to a new report, Apple is planning to gradually reduce the size of the notch and then eliminate it starting next year. But it won't stop there.
The topic of the iPhone notch has been discussed a lot since its introduction in 2017. While the iPhone notch was initially bad-mouthed, it is now a fashion accessory. Many manufacturers have followed Apple and designed a similar notch. But it is not meant to stay forever. Several analysts believe that Apple will reduce the notch as early as next year - after that, the notch will disappear completely over the next two years.
At least that is what the well-known and accurate star analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims. Analysts from the investment firm Credit Suisse in Asia have also spoken out. However, they go further, as the China Times writes. Apple is said to be introducing a completely new iPhone in 2020. According to their information, this will have a camera under the display and will not have Face ID. Instead, the iPhone will be introduced with a new type of Touch ID under the entire screen. The new fingerprint authentication is based on sound waves - according to the analysts - a corresponding Patent was discovered several months ago.
Will Face ID disappear by 2021?
They also believe that Apple will present three iPhone models completely without a notch as early as 2021 - these will then make the transition to a notchless iPhone, with a front camera under the display and the new Touch ID technology. According to the report, Apple's timeline will look like this:
- 2019: Three new iPhones with Face ID and no changes to the notch
- 2020: Two new iPhones with facial recognition and slimmer notches, a new notchless iPhone with full-screen fingerprint authentication
- 2021: Three new notchless iPhones with full-screen fingerprint authentication
The interesting thing is that beginning of July the Chinese news site caijing.com.cn has made a similar claim. They also claim to have learned that Apple is planning a new iPhone with Touch ID under the display as early as next year. However, the device is only intended for the Chinese market and will be much cheaper. According to the news site, the costs for Touch ID under the display are significantly lower than for Face ID.
Three sources with the same statement
Analysts at Barclay also reported in May that forecast They also claim to have heard similar things from Asian suppliers. Even back then there was talk of an acoustic-based Touch ID technology. For many it sounds unbelievable that Apple allegedly wants to abolish Face ID, but if several sources claim the same thing, then such statements should definitely be taken seriously and still remain skeptical. If more reports of this kind appear in the next few months, we can expect major changes.
