iPhone 18 Pro: Apple plans camera with variable aperture

Next year's iPhone 18 Pro could bring one of the biggest camera innovations in Apple smartphone history. According to supply chain reports, Apple plans to equip the Pro models with a variable aperture—a system previously found only in professional DSLR cameras. This would allow the iPhone 18 Pro to offer more precise control over light, focus, and depth of field, significantly expanding the capabilities of smartphone photography.

For years, Apple has focused on improving its camera technology with each new iPhone generation. While sensors, software, and zoom systems have been continuously optimized, the aperture has always remained fixed. Models like the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro all feature a fixed f/1.78 aperture. The iPhone 18 Pro is set to change this approach. A well-known Chinese leaker, active on Weibo under the handle Digital Chat Station, reports that the main camera of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will feature a variable aperture—a feature previously unavailable on any iPhone.

Variable aperture for more control over light and focus

According to the leak, the iPhone 18 Pro's main camera—which Apple calls a 48-megapixel Fusion Camera—will feature a variable aperture. This system allows the lens opening to be physically changed. A larger aperture lets more light into the sensor, improving images in low-light conditions. A smaller aperture, on the other hand, reduces the amount of light but increases depth of field, resulting in sharper results in bright scenes.

Unlike previous iPhone cameras, which have a fixed aperture, the iPhone 18 Pro would allow users to vary this setting—either automatically or manually. This opens up new possibilities for image composition: softer background blur for portraits, sharper details in landscape shots, or better-exposed night photos.

Another detail concerns the telephoto lens. Apple is also planning a larger aperture here. This would mean zoom shots in low-light conditions could be brighter and more detailed. A larger aperture in the telephoto range is a decisive advantage, especially in twilight or indoor shots, as it enables less image noise and more natural colors.

Previous models with fixed aperture

Previous iPhone generations all use a fixed aperture of f/1.78. This applies to both the iPhone 15 Pro and its successors, the 16 Pro and 17 Pro. On these models, the aperture remains permanently fixed at its widest setting, which, while producing good results, doesn't allow for adjustment to changing lighting conditions. With the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple would take the step many professional photographers have been demanding for years: true manual control over the aperture.

Reliable source with good hit rate

The information comes from Digital Chat Station, a leaker who has published accurate Apple information in the past. The rumor receives additional support from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who stated back in November 2024 that Apple planned to equip the iPhone 18 Pro models with a variable aperture. Even then, there was speculation that an iPhone 17 model might receive this feature, but it ultimately never made it to market. Now, it is expected to become a permanent feature of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

Possible market launch and technical outlook

According to current estimates, the iPhone 18 Pro is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2026. In addition to the variable aperture, further camera optimizations are expected – such as larger sensor surfaces, redesigned telephoto lenses, and even closer integration with image processing by Apple's proprietary software. Combined with computational photography, the new hardware could deliver more realistic colors, improved dynamic range, and more precise lighting control. If these predictions prove true, the iPhone 18 Pro would be the first iPhone with a truly mechanically adjustable aperture. This would mark Apple's move toward bringing the smartphone camera closer to professional photography technology.

The iPhone 18 Pro ushers in a new era of smartphone photography

With the introduction of a variable aperture in the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple would deliver the biggest advance in camera design in years. The ability to adjust the aperture could significantly improve the quality of iPhone photography and open up new creative possibilities. What was previously only possible with DSLR or mirrorless cameras could soon be built right into the smartphone. The iPhone 18 Pro would thus not only open a new chapter in Apple's camera history, but also redefine the standard for mobile photography altogether. (Image: Shutterstock / Anna Hoychuk)
