iPhone 17 Leak: Apple plans battery under 3,000 mAh

Battery life is a perennial concern with new smartphones. Especially with Apple, there's regular discussion about whether the design comes at the expense of battery life. Now there's new information about the iPhone 17 Air. A leak suggests that the battery capacity is significantly lower than what we're used to from current iPhones. Nevertheless, Apple reportedly promises all-day battery life – made possible by software and accessories. What's behind the leak, and how credible are the claims?

The Chinese Weibo account "Instant Digital" reports that the upcoming iPhone 17 Air will launch with a battery capacity of less than 3,000 mAh. Specifically, they're talking about around 2,800 mAh. This would be a significant step down from current iPhones, which usually have larger capacities. At the same time, iOS 26's new power mode is supposed to ensure that the battery life will still last all day.

Smaller battery capacity on the iPhone 17 Air

The specification of less than 3,000 mAh isn't entirely surprising. Previous rumors had already mentioned a capacity of around 2,800 mAh. This would put the iPhone 17 Air on par with older models like the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 mini. Such capacities were still common back then. Since then, batteries have become larger—usually over 3,000 mAh. Because Apple typically uses batteries with a similar voltage in its devices, the mAh values are easy to compare.

Software to compensate for battery weakness

iOS 26 introduces a new adaptive power mode. It's designed to ensure the iPhone 17 Air can handle everyday use despite its smaller battery. According to a report by "The Information," Apple's internal tests found that around 60 to 70 percent of users can get through the day with the iPhone 17 Air without needing to recharge. By comparison, this figure for other current iPhones is around 80 to 90 percent.

Extremely thin design limits battery size

The reason for the smaller battery is apparently the casing. According to a report by Wayne Ma ("The Information"), the iPhone 17 Air will be the thinnest iPhone ever, measuring just 5.5 millimeters. However, the design comes at a price: There's simply less room inside for a larger battery. Apple will therefore have to make do with less capacity or rely on software that uses more energy efficiently.

Apple plans battery case as an accessory

Another detail from the report: Apple is apparently working on a battery case for the iPhone 17 Air. It will be available as an option and provide additional power. The company has offered similar solutions in the past – most recently with the MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 series and before that with the Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 11 series. With this accessory, users could extend battery life while protecting the device.

How reliable is the source?

The Weibo account Instant Digital has published several accurate Apple leaks in the past. For example, the yellow finish for the iPhone 14 or the titanium band for the Apple Watch Ultra 2. However, there have also been cases where the information was incorrect. Therefore, the information seems plausible, but has not been officially confirmed.

iPhone 17 Air focuses on form rather than endurance

The iPhone 17 Air could launch with a battery under 3,000 mAh—and that would be a clear step backward, at least on paper. Apple is trying to compensate for this with intelligent power management in iOS 26. Nevertheless, users should expect a somewhat shorter battery life. Those who want more should be able to opt for the optional battery case. The reason for all this is the extremely thin design that Apple apparently wants to implement with the iPhone 17 Air. Whether this plan works will become clear once the device is officially unveiled. (Image: MajinBuOfficial)
