Central Computer Processors CPU concept

Although the iPhone 17 is still over a year away, the rumor mill is already bubbling. The reports about a possible 2nm chip in the new Pro models are particularly exciting. But as is often the case, there are different opinions and leaks. In this article, we take a close look at the latest information and analyze whether the 2nm chip can actually be expected in the iPhone 17 or whether we have to wait until the iPhone 18.

Leaks and rumors are commonplace in the world of technology. Especially when it comes to Apple, there are numerous insiders and informants who share their assessments and information with the public. For you as a technology enthusiast, it is important to evaluate and classify this information. Therefore, today we are taking a closer look at the latest reports about the 2nm chip in the iPhone 17.

Reports about the 2nm chip in the iPhone 17

The Financial Times reported back in December last year that TSMC recently showed off its 2nm chips to Apple, suggesting that the first of these chips could be used in the iPhone 17 Pro in 2025. Digitimes also confirmed that TSMC's 2nm chip production is "progressing well and on track for volume production in 2025." Production is expected to begin on a small scale in the second quarter of 2025, so mass production could start in the third quarter in time for the iPhone 17 launch. TrendForce also seemed to support this timeline in May this year. A new report suggests that there was a "secret meeting" between Apple's Jeff Williams and TSMC. This meeting may have seen a deal agreed in which Apple reserves all of TSMC's 2nm capacity - similar to the 3nm technology. ET News reported last week that plans for the 2nm chips were ahead of schedule.

Doubts of a leaker with a respectable record

Despite this optimistic reports There are also critical voices. An informant who describes himself as an “expert on mobile phone chips” designated, doubts the feasibility of a 2nm chip in the iPhone 17. He claims that mass production of the 2nm chips will not begin until late 2025. Therefore, it is unlikely that the chip will be used in the iPhone 17. Instead, the 2nm chip will only be used in the iPhone 18. The informant has a respectable track record and was, among other things, the first to report that the A16 chip would be exclusive to the two iPhone 14 Pro models. He also recently reported that Apple is developing its own 3nm chips for its AI servers.

Analysis and Outlook

At this point, it is difficult to judge the accuracy of the reports. On the one hand, there are numerous sources that support the introduction of the 2nm chip in the iPhone 17. On the other hand, there are credible voices that doubt this. For most iPhone users, this question will not influence a purchase decision in the next few months, as most are either planning to upgrade to the iPhone 16 or will keep their iPhone 15 Pro for a while.

Rumor mill is bubbling: iPhone 17 or iPhone 18 with 2nm chip?

It remains to be seen whether the 2nm chip will be used in the iPhone 17 or only in the iPhone 18. The reports and leaks provide exciting insights, but ultimately we have to wait for official announcements from Apple. Until then, it remains exciting to follow the developments and look forward to the next iPhone generation. Stay tuned to always get the latest information and analysis.
