Apple is facing an exciting change. After years in which the iPhones have attracted attention with minor improvements, big changes are on the way with the iPhone 17 Air and plans for foldable devices. A new report from the Wall Street Journal shows where things are headed: an ultra-thin and affordable iPhone and the development of foldable technologies that could redefine the market from 2026 onwards.

Apple has a reputation for setting technological trends. But in recent years it has often been criticized that the advances in iPhones have no longer been groundbreaking but rather incremental. Now the company seems to be relying on new innovations to bring fresh momentum to the market. The iPhone 17 Air could appeal to a wide target group with its sleek design and affordable price. At the same time, it is clear that Apple wants to push the boundaries of what smartphones and laptops can do with its plans for foldable devices.

iPhone 17 Air: Thinner, cheaper, more minimalist

The iPhone 17 Air will be an ultra-thin smartphone that sets new standards in design with a profile of just 8 millimeters. Despite its slim design, there should be no compromises in usability and it should fit seamlessly into Apple's product range. What is particularly striking is that it will be cheaper than the current Pro models, which represents an interesting new direction for Apple. There were originally rumors that the iPhone 17 Air would be the most expensive model in the iPhone range. But according to the Wall Street Journal report, it will be exactly the opposite: It will be cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro and start at about the same price level as the iPhone 16 Plus, i.e. at around 1,099 euros.

Slim, elegant and price-conscious

This means that the iPhone 17 Air is aimed at customers who are looking for a modern, elegant device without having to pay the price of a Pro model. In order to reduce the price, the iPhone 17 Air will use a simplified camera system. While the Pro models rely on complex multi-camera systems, the iPhone 17 Air could be limited to fewer lenses. However, this should mainly appeal to users who want a high-quality smartphone but do not necessarily need the high-end photography features.

Apple's plans for foldable devices

In addition to the iPhone 17 Air, Apple is working on two foldable devices that are scheduled to be unveiled in 2026. The first will be a foldable iPhone that will offer a larger display when unfolded than the current 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max. At least 7 inches is expected. Apple has tested various design approaches for the foldable iPhone. Initially, it developed a display that faces outwards when folded. However, the company has now decided on an inward-facing display – similar to other foldable smartphones on the market. The second foldable device will be a hybrid between a laptop and a tablet. According to information from the Wall Street Journal, it will have a 19-inch display when unfolded. This could make it a laptop replacement and usher in a completely new class of device.

challenges in development

However, developing foldable devices is no easy task. Apple has struggled with issues with hinges and display covers in recent years. These technical challenges have already led to delays. Despite everything, the company aims to launch the foldable iPhone by 2026 at the latest, although it may need more time to offer a perfectly functioning product.

The iPhone 17 Air and foldable devices: Apple's look into the future

With the iPhone 17 Air and the plans for foldable devices, Apple is showing that the company is ready to break new ground. The iPhone 17 Air could appeal to a broad target group with its sleek design and lower price, while the foldable devices could change the smartphone and laptop markets in the long term. It remains exciting to see how these developments will affect Apple's strategy and the market. One thing is clear: With these new products, Apple is not only focusing on innovation but also on reaching new target groups. (Photo by mariakray / Bigstockphoto)
