The rumors surrounding the iPhone 12 have been very contradictory and confusing when it comes to 5G support. Now there is a new report that aims to provide more clarity.

While the rumors surrounding the display, camera, etc. are clear, previous reports surrounding 5G connectivity have been rather confusing. To be precise, it's about the type of 5G. So the question remains: Will all iPhone 12 models get mmWave 5G or will it be limited to certain versions or certain countries? Some sources believe that only the iPhone 12 Pro series will have the faster mmWave 5G standard worldwide, while others believe that only certain countries will have access to this technology. Now a report has been published by Taiwanese news site DigiTimes that partially provides an answer. As a reminder, there are two main 5G standards known as sub-6HGz and mmWave 5G.

Half of the iPhone 12 range will receive mmWave 5G

Sub-6 GHz is slower than mmWave 5G technology, but it has a longer range - suitable for rural areas. Since mmWave is faster but has a shorter range, this technology is more intended for large cities or urban areas. Specifically, some believe that this technology will only be reserved for markets such as the US, UK and Canada. DigiTimes writes:

Shipments of mmWave-enabled 5G iPhones, scheduled to launch later this year, are now estimated to reach only 15-20 million units in 2020, compared to an earlier supply chain estimate of 30-40 million units, increasing competition among Apple's suppliers.

While the report does not answer the question of which countries will receive this iPhone 5G version, it supports earlier statements that not all will receive this device version. AirPods Pro on special offer at Amazon – now available for 219 euros. (Photo by Skorzewiak / Bigstockphoto)
