WETZLAR, GERMANY - 2020-07-10: APPLE iPad Pro is a tablet computer from the iPad model line from Apple.

Rumors that Apple might introduce an iPad Pro model with mini-LED panels early next year have been circulating for months. But now there are rumors about OLED devices.

According to various reports, Apple is preparing at least one iPad Pro model with mini-LED backlighting, which is scheduled to hit the market in early 2021. A report by Korea-based publication However, The Elec suggests that some models in the 2021 iPad Pro lineup may also adopt OLED display technology. According to the report, Samsung Display and LG Display are currently developing new OLED panels for the tablets. Unlike a mini-LED model, these OLED-equipped iPad Pro models are reportedly set to launch in the second half of 2021. However, The Elec warns that Apple's plan to introduce iPad Pro models with OLEDs could be delayed depending on the scale of the rollout of mini-LED-backlit LCD displays. These OLED displays are said to be manufactured to higher standards than the versions used in Apple's iPhone lineup. The reason for this is that the failure rate on tablets could be higher than on smartphones.

Further information

Since tablets are typically used for longer periods of time, OLED panels with only one emitting layer could experience burn-in or loss of brightness over time. For example, Samsung Display is said to be adding a manifold chamber to one of its OLED production lines that is capable of stacking emitting layers on top of each other. The result would be an OLED panel with a longer lifespan compared to those that use only one layer. So far, rumors surrounding new iPad Pro models have suggested the use of miniLEDs, but not OLEDs. Therefore, the rumor is currently causing confusion. Of course, a change of plan is possible. Mini-LED and OLED screens have many of the same advantages over traditional LCDs, including higher brightness, improved contrast ratio, and greater energy efficiency. On offer at Amazon – buy Apple products now and save money thanks to Black Friday. (Photo by Colour59 / Bigstockphoto)
