The introduction of new iOS versions is one of the highlights for Apple users, but this year there is a setback. The development of iOS 19 is progressing more slowly because Apple is still busy completing iOS 18 updates. You can find out exactly what is behind this, what new features iOS 19 will bring and what the delays will mean here.

Apple is known for presenting exciting new features for its iOS operating system every year at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) in June. The new software is usually released in September along with the latest iPhone models. But this year it is clear that the strategy of staggered updates in iOS 18 has far-reaching consequences for the next version. While many users are eagerly awaiting iOS 19, there are already signs that the wait will be longer and more impatient.

Why is iOS 19 delayed?

The delays in iOS 19 are directly related to the ongoing work on iOS 18. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reportedthat Apple developers, who would normally already start working on the next iOS version, are continuing to work on the updates of iOS 18. These affect planned point versions such as iOS 18.3 and iOS 18.4, which are expected to be released in spring 2025. The reason for this extended development time is the introduction of new functions, in particular the so-called Apple Intelligence Features. These use artificial intelligence to make iPhones smarter and more adaptable. However, the technical complexity of these functions requires more time than originally expected. As a result, the development of iOS 19 is stalling. Features that were supposed to be ready in time for release in September 2025 are now being postponed to later point versions such as iOS 19.4, which are not expected until spring 2026.

What new features does iOS 19 bring?

Despite the delays, Apple has big plans for iOS 19. The most important new features include:

  • A comprehensive Siri upgrade: One of the most exciting changes concerns Siri. The integration of advanced language models will make the voice assistant much more conversational. Similar to AI tools such as ChatGPT, Siri will be able to understand and respond to more complex questions. However, this function will not be fully available until iOS 19.4, i.e. in April 2026.
  • Further developments in Apple Intelligence: Building on the foundations of iOS 18, iOS 19 is designed to offer even deeper app integrations and intelligent automation. This will allow users to personalize and automate their iPhone even more.
  • Staggered rollout: As with iOS 18, Apple plans to release new AI features gradually. This means that some features will be available directly in September 2025, while others will follow in later updates.

impact on users

The delays to iOS 19 could be frustrating for many users, especially those who are looking forward to a completely new version of iOS with all the features. Apple users are used to getting a full-fledged update in September that's ready to go. However, with the new strategy, many features will have to wait for later point releases. One benefit of this staggered rollout, however, could be the higher quality of the features. The longer development time gives Apple the opportunity to thoroughly test the new features and minimize potential bugs. For example, the Siri upgrade could work more smoothly when it is finally released. It also gives Apple flexibility to respond to user feedback and make further improvements throughout the iOS cycle.

iOS 19: Delays with potential for a better user experience

The delays to iOS 19 show how demanding the development of modern operating systems has become. Apple is faced with the challenge of integrating new features such as the Siri upgrade and intelligent automation without compromising stability and user experience. Even though many features will not be available until later, iOS 19 promises an exciting development that could make using your iPhone even more intuitive and intelligent. Until then, it's worth keeping an eye on the iOS 18 updates to benefit from the latest improvements. (Photo by yalcin.sonat / Bigstockphoto)
