Display analyst Ross Young recently released new information about the Face ID technology update on Apple's iPhone. According to him, the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro will be the first iPhone to feature Face ID under the display. Below you can find out more about the latest developments and what this could mean for future iPhone models.
Since introducing Face ID on the iPhone X, Apple has continuously improved and evolved the technology. Currently, the front-facing camera is housed in a circular cutout on the display, called the Dynamic Island. With the introduction of under-display Face ID, Apple could remove this cutout and achieve an "all-screen" design for its iPhones. Ross Young's updated roadmap for the rollout of under-display Face ID saysthat the iPhone 17 Pro will be the first iPhone with this technology. However, Young expects the front camera to continue to be accompanied by a circular cutout for the best result.
Face ID update: Sensor problems cause problems for Apple
This implementation is expected to remain on the "Pro" models until 2027. Young originally anticipated the introduction of under-display Face ID on the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024. However, due to "sensor issues," this schedule was pushed back a year. The current cutouts that comprise the Dynamic Island are expected to remain unchanged for three consecutive generations of "Pro" iPhones. In addition to the introduction of under-display Face ID, the standard iPhone 17 will also support the "ProMotion" feature, previously reserved for Apple's high-end devices.
iPhone 17 Pro: The update will be a significant step
ProMotion enables a higher refresh rate, resulting in smoother on-screen content. The introduction of under-display Face ID on the iPhone 17 Pro will be a significant step for Apple. It is expected to lead to an "all-screen" design for future iPhones. However, the one-year delay also shows that Apple is very cautious when introducing new technologies. We will have to wait and see how this development will impact the market. But it is certain that many Apple fans will welcome the changes with the launch of the iPhone 17 Pro.
