Apple Watch: What will change with watchOS 12

Apple is planning some changes for the Apple Watch. While the hardware remains largely unchanged, there are hints of minor design tweaks and new materials. The upcoming software innovations are much more interesting. With watchOS 12, the user interface is set to change, and features from Apple Intelligence will be integrated – even if the watch doesn't run them natively. The following overview shows what to expect.

If you use an Apple Watch or are considering getting one, now is a good time to look ahead to the upcoming changes. Apple is working on a major software update and some minor hardware tweaks. While previous rumors have pointed to new sensors and cameras, recent reports indicate that Apple is primarily tweaking the design, functionality, and smart software.

watchOS 12 brings visible changes

The most important innovation concerns the software. According to a report by Bloomberg, watchOS 12 will adopt some elements from visionOS. Semi-transparent menus, new icons, and a generally revised look are planned. These design changes are part of a larger strategy that also affects iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16. Apple wants to create a more consistent and modern appearance across all platforms. watchOS 12 also brings features that are indirectly related to Apple Intelligence. Even if the Apple Watch itself isn't powerful enough to run Apple Intelligence directly, you can access results generated on the iPhone via the watch. This includes, for example, an intelligent summary of your notifications. Siri is also expected to benefit from the AI features. While the new version doesn't run directly on the Apple Watch, improved responses and interactions via the iPhone could be transferred to your watch. This will make Siri on the watch more accurate and context-aware.

Hardware: minor changes instead of major changes

The hardware will be little changed in the near future. According to current information, major changes are unlikely. Nevertheless, according to several reports, Apple is considering new materials and designs. One suggestion is an Apple Watch with a glass case – a rather futuristic approach. Another report floats the idea of a cheaper Apple Watch SE, possibly made of plastic or a similar material. The goal would be a more affordable model suitable for a wider target audience. These changes would be visually noticeable but are unlikely to bring any additional features or sensors. However, the new models could be more closely aligned with the design language of the iPhone, Mac, and iPad, which would help unify the product range (via Bloomberg).

No native Apple Intelligence, but integration via other devices

A key topic is the role of Apple Intelligence on the Apple Watch. Here, too, it's clear: The watch itself won't directly support this technology. The necessary computing power is lacking. Nevertheless, the watch will be able to display results from other Apple devices. This keeps the Apple Watch integrated into the AI ecosystem, even if it doesn't perform any computationally intensive tasks itself. This gives you access to selected features—such as new forms of information presentation or context-based notifications—without the watch itself having to be re-equipped.

watchOS 12 and design tweaks: What's next for the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch remains technically up-to-date, but will receive a software update and possibly a redesigned design. watchOS 12 brings visible changes and the first steps toward Apple Intelligence. While no fundamental overhaul is planned, using the Apple Watch will become noticeably more modern. If you already have an Apple Watch, you can look forward to a software update that improves design and functionality. If you're considering getting a new watch, models with different materials may soon be of interest to you.
