It was recently reported that Apple's mixed reality headset could feature eye tracking. Now the renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has spoken out again and published further details.

The Apple analyst recently reported on the potential feature set, with Kuo stating that Apple's mixed reality headset could have features such as eye tracking. In his latest letter, which 9to5mac receive Kuo explains that current virtual reality headsets weigh over 300 grams and have a bulky form factor. This is something Apple wants to avoid with its release. Apple's VR/AR product is expected to use the ultra-short focal length Fresnel hybrid lens, which has an improved field of view as well as reduced weight and thickness. The analyst believes that the new Apple-built headset will weigh less than 150 grams, which will be a big advantage compared to similar devices that currently exist. The device will feature lenses made of plastic instead of glass, which are lighter - however, details about the durability of the material are unknown.

Apple VR/AR headset is expected to cost around $1,000

While AR devices don't offer an immersive experience like VR devices, they generally have a more compact, affordable form factor. The challenge for Apple is to build a VR-capable device that is also lightweight and not bulky.

For video see-through AR HMDs and VR HMDs, the key design trend is to achieve a thin and lightweight design with an ultra-short focal length lens/Fresnel lens. The design challenge is also related to the display, optical material, thermals and production. We believe that solving this complicated optical design is one of the key competitive advantages of video see-through AR HMDs and in the future.

Kuo also reiterates that Apple will use Micro-OLED displays for its headset to compensate for the reduced brightness caused by the Fresnel hybrid lenses. Earlier this month, the analyst revealed that the new device will feature 15 built-in camera lenses. Rumors suggest that Apple's mixed reality headset will be released sometime in 2022 and will cost around $1000. (Photo by timofeev / Bigstockphoto)
