Apple has introduced the Vision Pro, a technically impressive headset, but its high price and considerable weight have put many off. The company is working on a cheaper version, but anyone hoping for a model soon will have to be patient. Analysts and insiders don't expect a release before the end of 2027. Until then, Apple will at least launch a redesigned Vision Pro, including new hardware and software.
Apple remains committed to the mixed reality business for the long term. While the current Apple Vision Pro is aimed at the premium segment, a slimmed-down and more affordable version is already being planned. The model, codenamed N100, is intended to be both lighter and significantly less expensive. However, development is not yet complete – and it will be several years before the device hits the market.
Affordable Vision headset not before 2027
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted back in June that the cheaper model wouldn't be released until late 2027. Now Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has confirmed this timeline. According to Gurman , the N100 headset is currently still in development. The design is expected to be completed in 2026, followed by market launch. The goal is to address the two biggest criticisms of the current Vision Pro: its high price and weight. According to Gurman, the N100 will be optimized in both areas. Apple wants to design the headset to be more suitable for everyday use and affordable for a wider target audience.
Apple is looking for savings potential
To reduce the price, Apple is currently examining which features and components can be eliminated or simplified on the N100. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, it's likely that Apple will use cheaper plastic for the casing instead of aluminum or other premium materials. Cost savings could also be made on the sensors. The EyeSight display on the front—a key element of the Vision Pro—could be completely eliminated on the cheaper model. It hasn't yet been decided which features will ultimately be included. Apple is apparently carefully considering how to reduce costs without drastically compromising the user experience.
New Vision Pro comes sooner
Before the N100 arrives, Apple will release a new version of the Vision Pro by the end of 2025. This model will feature an M4 processor and a newly designed headband designed to improve comfort. It's an interim solution—a way for Apple to update its mixed reality offering while the cheaper version is still in development.
Apple's mixed reality strategy is long-term
The more affordable Apple Vision headset, codenamed N100, is in the works but isn't expected to launch until late 2027. Until then, Apple is focusing on an updated Vision Pro with new technology and an improved design. The goal remains clear: Apple wants to maintain a long-term presence in the AR and VR space – with devices that could become affordable for more people in the future.
