Apple Studio Display: Will the big successor arrive in 2026?

According to recent reports, Apple is working on a new external monitor that is scheduled to be released in early 2026. It would be the first new Apple monitor since the introduction of the Apple Studio Display in 2022. Insider information suggests that Apple is testing several models and may incorporate new technologies such as mini-LED.

The Apple Studio Display was introduced in 2022 and is primarily aimed at professional users who work with Macs. With 5K resolution, a Thunderbolt port, and an integrated camera, it offers a powerful overall package, but has remained technically unchanged since its release. Now there are hints of a successor or at least a new display model. Analysts and Apple insiders such as Ross Young and Mark Gurman provide concrete details on the planning and possible innovations.

Apple's plans for the new monitor

According to Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a new external monitor with the internal code name J427. This is scheduled to be released in early 2026 – parallel to the launch of new Macs with M5 chips. It would be the first new model since the current Studio Display. However, Gurman avoids the name "Studio Display" in his report and instead refers to the device generally as an external monitor. Whether Apple plans to introduce a new name or simply release a new version under the old name remains to be seen. Back in February, Gurman reported that Apple was accelerating development of a new Studio Display. In the current report, he gives a more specific timeframe for the first time: early 2026. This adds to the evidence pointing to an imminent generational change in Apple's monitors.

Two displays in development

In addition to the J427 monitor, Gurman says there's a second model codenamed J527. In March, he said Apple is working on either two versions of the Studio Display or a second, standalone monitor with different specifications or a different screen size. A successor to the Pro Display XDR, which hasn't been updated since 2019, is also possible. Which version Apple will actually launch is currently unclear.

Mini-LED as a possible innovation

Ross Young, an analyst specializing in display technologies, revealed a new detail earlier this year: Apple is reportedly working on a new 27-inch display with mini-LED technology. This could be released in late 2025 or early 2026 and will be identical to the next-generation Studio Display. Young believes it's likely that Apple will replace the existing Studio Display with a mini-LED version. Mini-LED would offer several advantages over the current LED panel, including higher brightness, a better contrast ratio, and potentially better energy efficiency. This would be a clear step forward for professional users, such as those in photography or video editing.

The current status: Apple Studio Display

The current Apple Studio Display was released alongside the Mac Studio in March 2022. It offers a resolution of 5120 × 2880 pixels (5K), a refresh rate of 60 Hz, a brightness of 600 nits, and features integrated speakers and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with Center Stage. On the back, there's a Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports. The display starts at a price of €1,749 in Germany. Despite its good features, there are some criticisms. For example, it lacks a higher refresh rate, HDR support, or ergonomic adjustment options at no extra cost. This is another reason for growing interest in a successor.

New Apple displays could arrive in 2026

Apple is apparently preparing to launch a new external display in early 2026. It could be the successor to the Apple Studio Display, possibly with mini-LED technology and paired with the new M5 Macs. Whether the product will bear the same name or Apple will introduce new branding remains to be seen. Additionally, a second display model is in development, which could possibly be released as the new Pro Display XDR. Users waiting for a modern Apple display with the latest technologies should have more options in the foreseeable future. (Image: Shutterstock / Noah Sauve)
