Apple is working on the second generation of the AirTag, which is expected to be released in May or June 2025. The new version of the popular tracking device is expected to come to market with several improvements, including a longer range, better security features, and closer integration with Apple's Vision Pro. The current information comes from well-known leaker Kosutami, who has already published reliable details about upcoming Apple products in the past. Bloomberg expert Mark Gurman had also previously predicted a market launch in mid-2025.

Since the introduction of the first AirTag in 2021, the compact tracking device has established itself as a popular accessory for quickly finding lost items. With the new generation, Apple wants to further expand the functionality of the AirTag and address security concerns in particular.

The AirTag 2 brings these new features

Extended range thanks to new ultra-wideband chip

One of the biggest innovations in the AirTag 2 is said to be the use of an improved second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip. This has already been installed in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 as well as in the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and enables much more precise location tracking. According to current information, the AirTag 2 with this chip could have a range up to three times greater than the current model. For comparison: the precise person search on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models already works at a distance of up to 60 meters. If Apple integrates this technology into the AirTag 2, tracking over longer distances could be much more reliable and accurate.

Improved security measures against stalking

Another important point is security. In recent years, there have been repeated reports of AirTags being misused, particularly for the unauthorized tracking of people. To address this problem, Apple is making the AirTag 2's built-in speaker more difficult to remove or tamper with. This measure is intended to ensure that a foreign AirTag that is unnoticed in your vicinity continues to give a loud audible warning as soon as it is detected. Apple and Google are already working together on measures against unauthorized tracking by Bluetooth trackers - with the new generation of the AirTag, further security features could be added.

Integration with Apple Vision Pro

Another interesting rumor concerns the improved integration of the AirTag 2 with the Apple Vision Pro. Although no exact details are known yet, this could mean that AirTags will be even better integrated into Apple's AR ecosystem in the future. A visual representation of the AirTag's position in the environment via the Vision Pro headset would be conceivable. This would make it possible to find lost objects not only by sound or map, but also to see them directly in the real environment using a virtual overlay.

price and market launch

The original AirTag was introduced in April 2021 and costs 39 euros per unit or 129 euros for a set of four in Germany. It is not yet known whether the price will change with the new generation. The source of the current leaks, the well-known leaker Kosutami, has made both precise and inaccurate predictions in the past. For example, while he correctly predicted the metal-encapsulated battery of the iPhone 16 Pro months in advance, he was wrong about the expected AirPods Pro 3. Nevertheless, his assessment of the release period coincides with the earlier forecasts of Bloomberg insider Mark Gurman.

What does the future hold?

In addition to the AirTag 2, there are other rumors about new Apple products. Kosutami recently hinted that a new generation of AirPods Pro and new smart home accessories from Apple are also on the way. In particular, there is speculation that Apple is working on an entirely new smart home hub, a Face ID doorbell and a smart home camera, but these could not be released until 2026 or later.

Why Patience Could Pay Off

With the AirTag 2, Apple seems to be significantly improving its tracking accessories. An increased range thanks to the new UWB chip, more security thanks to a speaker that is difficult to manipulate and better integration with the Vision Pro make the new AirTag an interesting upgrade. The exact market launch is expected in May or June 2025, but official confirmation from Apple is still pending. So if you're thinking about getting an AirTag, it might be worth waiting a few more months for the second generation. (Photo by Unsplash / Daniel Romero)
