Absurd: iPhone SE 2 is said to receive Face ID

Anapa, Russia - October 3, 2019: Man hand holding iPhone 11 with scanning Face ID on the screen. iPhone 11 was created and developed by the Apple inc.

It would be a dream of many fans – the iPhone SE 2 in the look of the iPhone X. But be careful – the latest report seems really absurd.

The Japanese Apple blog Macotakara has caused a huge stir and, above all, even more confusion with a new report. It is actually record-breaking. All signs point to an iPhone SE successor in spring 2020. Rumor has it that it will be the "iPhone 9" in the design of the iPhone 8. The device will be delivered with the latest A13 chip and more RAM - but it will use Touch ID. Now Macotakara claims that Apple will probably release an updated iPhone 8 with Face ID. What? The report actually quotes a source who claims to have heard exactly that at this year's CES 2020. Apple employees are said to have talked about exactly such a model. In addition to facial recognition, the device is also said to have a larger camera (dual camera?) than expected. According to Macotakara, a presentation is planned for spring 2020. But that's not all - there's more.

Macotakara's iPhone SE 2 – The ultimate in confusion

The device will also come with a notch that is a slightly "different" size. The display would also be 5.4 inches. The entire Macotakara article is just confusing. The authors seem to have mixed up previous rumors about various devices. It should be certain by now that Apple will introduce a new iPhone based on the iPhone 8 with the current A13 chip. Whether it will be the iPhone 9 or iPhone SE 2 remains to be seen. But the device will almost certainly rely on Touch ID and have a 4.7-inch display. Apple's 2020 plan is actually supposed to include a smaller iPhone with Face ID - but that will by no means be based on the design of the iPhone 8. Several sources have already predicted this - here is an overview of the possible iPhone 2020 lineup:

  • iPhone 9 / iPhone SE 2: Will probably appear in the design of the iPhone 8 with Touch ID and the latest A13 processor – release date spring 2020.
  • OLED iPhone 5.4-inch display: This device will have a dual camera and will be presented in autumn
  • OLED iPhone 6.1-inch display: This device will also have a dual camera and will probably be presented in autumn
  • OLED iPhone 6.1-inch display: This version of the 6.1-inch device is expected to feature a triple camera with 3D function based on Time-of-Flight technology and will debut in the fall
  • OLED iPhone 6.7-inch display: This model is the large version of the high-end device. It is also said to have a triple camera with 3D function.

iPhone SE with Face ID – Cool but unlikely

These models have already been predicted by Ming-Chi Kuo and other sources. According to this, Macotakara seems to have thrown together the individual rumors about the 5.4-inch OLED device and the supposed iPhone SE successor - for whatever reason. So the Macotakara report should actually be labeled an absurd rumor and should definitely not be taken seriously - even if an iPhone SE with Face ID would certainly be cool.
