Every year, the Apple world watches WWDC with fascination. New versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and the like are standard. But this year, something completely new could be coming: an operating system called homeOS. The term hasn't been officially announced, but a trademark application from April 2025 is now causing a stir. There are some indications that Apple will indeed unveil a new platform for the smart home at WWDC 2025.
On April 16, 2025, the term "homeOS" was registered as a trademark. The company responsible for this is Home Operations Suite LLC. At first glance, this seems inconspicuous, but the details indicate that it is a typical Apple front company. The registration covers categories such as "computer and software products" and "computer and software services." Exactly what one would expect from an operating system launch. The timing—just a few weeks before WWDC—further reinforces the suspicion.
An operating system for the Apple Smart Home
So far, Apple has relied on a combination of the Home app, HomeKit, Siri, and various operating system variants for its smart home products. The HomePod, for example, runs on a modified version of tvOS. This creates technical limitations and a confusing setup. A standalone homeOS could change that. It would create a central platform specifically designed for controlling and managing smart home devices.
Two possible scenarios for WWDC 2025
There are currently two realistic ways in which homeOS could be presented at the developer conference. The first option would be the presentation of new hardware – specifically a new device called "HomePad", which has been rumored for some time. If Apple does indeed show the HomePad, it would be the perfect opportunity to simultaneously unveil homeOS as its operating system. This would allow Apple to give developers early access to the platform and enable initial applications. The second option would be a pure software update, in which Apple consolidates existing systems such as tvOS or the HomePod software under the new name homeOS. This would also send a signal. In this way, Apple could set the course for a unified smart home experience without launching a new product. Developers and users would get their first glimpses into the homeOS concept, for example through new features for Apple TV 4K or the HomePod.
Trademark registration as a central indication
The most important indicator of an impending announcement remains the trademark application itself. Apple often takes this approach with new products and platforms: shell company, generic names, inconspicuous applications. That's exactly what happened here. Home Operations Suite LLC appears only in connection with this one trademark. And it's structured in the same way as previous Apple trademark acquisitions. The parallels are clear.
Why WWDC is the right time
WWDC isn't just a developer conference; it's Apple's platform for strategically important software announcements. New operating systems like iOS, macOS, and watchOS have traditionally been unveiled here for the first time. Hardware also plays a recurring role—for example, the 2017 HomePod or the 2023 Vision Pro headset. HomeOS fits perfectly into the pattern. Whether as a new platform or a redesign of existing systems, if Apple is planning something in the smart home space this year, it will be unveiled next week.
homeOS is just around the corner – all signs point to it
Whether Apple is actually showing off the new HomePad or simply introducing a new system is still up in the air. What's clear, however, is that the trademark filing, the timing, and Apple's previous approach suggest that homeOS will become official at WWDC 2025. It would be a logical step toward greater control and integration in the smart home. If you use Apple products or have a connected home, you should keep a close eye on what's announced on Monday.
