WhatsApp regularly updates its requirements to keep the app secure and functional. These updates bring new features, better performance and increased security. But sometimes they also mean that older devices are no longer supported. This is exactly what will happen from May 5th, 2025. WhatsApp will no longer work on iPhones with an iOS version below 15.1. Here's what devices are affected, why this is happening, and what you can do to be prepared.

If you use an iPhone, you know how important updates are. They ensure that your smartphone remains secure and all apps run smoothly. However, older devices eventually reach their limits. In such cases, developers decide to stop supporting these devices. This is now also the case with WhatsApp. This is an important moment to plan the next steps, especially for users of older iPhones such as the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus.

Which iPhones are affected?

From May 5th, 2025, WhatsApp will support the following models set: set:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These devices run iOS versions that are no longer compatible with WhatsApp's current requirements. Users of these models will no longer be able to send or receive messages from this date.

What does that mean exactly?

After the deadline, you will no longer be able to use WhatsApp on these devices. This applies to writing and receiving messages as well as accessing your chats and media. The app will simply stop working.

Why is this done?

WhatsApp has two main reasons for this decision:

  • Security: Older operating systems no longer have the technical basis to meet the high security standards of WhatsApp. There are no longer any security updates from Apple for these devices.
  • Technology: New functions and features that WhatsApp regularly introduces require modern technologies that cannot be supported on older devices.

What can you do?

If you own one of the affected devices, you have several options to prepare:

Check iOS version

First, you should check which version of iOS your device is running. You do this under “Settings > General > About”. If an update to iOS 15.1 or later is possible, install it to continue using WhatsApp.

Backup WhatsApp data

If you want to buy a new iPhone, you should make sure that your WhatsApp data is not lost. Create a backup in iCloud:

  • Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  • Choose Chats > Chat Backup.
  • Tap “Backup Now” to save your data.

You can restore this backup later on a new device.

Switch to a new device

If your iPhone cannot be updated to iOS 15.1 or later, your only option is to upgrade to a newer model. Thanks to the chat transfer function, you can easily transfer your chats and media to a new iPhone. You can find detailed instructions on how to do this in Help Center from WhatsApp.

What happens if you don't do anything?

If you don't upgrade or back up your chats, you will no longer have access to WhatsApp starting May 2025. This can be particularly annoying if important messages or data are stored in the app.

WhatsApp: What you should do now

WhatsApp adapts to the technical requirements of the times, and older devices can no longer meet them. From May 2025, iPhone models such as the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus will no longer be supported. If you use one of these devices, it is important to act in a timely manner. Back up your chats, check your device's iOS version, and plan an upgrade if necessary. This means you can easily master the transition and continue to use WhatsApp as usual. (Photo by bigtunaonline / Bigstockphoto)
