WhatsApp is apparently preparing an app for the iPad. This would make the popular messenger officially available on Apple's tablet for the first time. This has been speculated about for a long time, but now, for the first time, there's a concrete sign from Meta – the company behind WhatsApp. The reactions leave no doubt: Many users have been waiting for this.
WhatsApp has become an integral part of everyday life. Whether it's private chats, group chats, or voice and video calls, the app is a staple on smartphones. On the iPad, however, there hasn't been a native solution yet. Users have had to resort to WhatsApp Web, which falls far short of the app in terms of convenience and features. Now, there are signs of an official version for the iPad—a step that's long overdue.
Meta reacts publicly – with emoji
The trigger for the current discussion was a post on platform X (formerly Twitter) calling for WhatsApp to finally be brought to the iPad. The official WhatsApp account simply responded with an eye emoji. That alone may not seem like much, but in social media contexts such an emoji is often seen as confirmation or a hint of upcoming news. In fact, an iPad version of WhatsApp is not entirely new. For almost two years, the app has been undergoing internal testing via Apple's TestFlight system. This is a platform that allows developers to share beta versions with select users. The general public has not had access to this version until now.
What would be new about the iPad version of WhatsApp?
The native iPad app would offer many advantages beyond WhatsApp Web. These include, above all, a user interface adapted to the larger display, promising greater clarity and ease of use. Integration into the iPadOS ecosystem—for example, through multitasking or Split View—would also be a clear step forward. Additionally, users could finally receive push notifications directly on their iPad. The ability to sync chats between iPhone, Mac, and iPad is also likely to be an integral part of the app. This would make using WhatsApp on Apple devices much more seamless.
Meta thinks broader – Instagram for iPad also in the works
WhatsApp isn't the only Meta app slated for the iPad. A native Instagram app for the iPad is also reportedly in the pipeline. So far, there's only a scaled-to-iPhone version, which doesn't really perform well on the iPad. Of Meta's main apps—WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Threads—only Facebook is officially available on the iPad. Threads, on the other hand, continues to run exclusively on the iPhone. This latest development indicates that Meta apparently plans to make its core products more accessible across platforms.
WhatsApp for iPad: Native app finally in sight
If you're a heavy WhatsApp user and also own an iPad, this is good news. The native app should eliminate many of the limitations iPad users have had to deal with so far. It's still unclear exactly when the app will be released, but the WhatsApp team's emoji post suggests it won't be long. As soon as more information becomes available, we'll see if the app delivers on its promises. In any case, the signs point to a release—and for many, this should make using WhatsApp significantly more enjoyable. (Image: Shutterstock / DenPhotos)
