The Mac mini has evolved into one of the most versatile computers in Apple's lineup in recent years. Compact, powerful, and relatively affordable, it appeals to both creatives and business users. With the redesign and switch to M4 and M4 Pro chips in October 2024, it received its first major update in over a decade. Now, there are new hints about the next generation, which is expected to feature M5 and M5 Pro chips.
Apple rumors are commonplace, but when concrete clues emerge, things get exciting. According to Marko Zivkovic of AppleInsider , a device ID was recently discovered that very likely belongs to a Mac mini with an M5 chip. Another ID for a possible Pro variant had already surfaced. This increases the evidence that Apple will offer two variants in its next update – similar to the current model. The only question is when the market launch might take place and whether there will be other changes besides the new processors.

The discovery of device IDs is usually a strong indication that new hardware is already being tested. The fact that two variants—M5 and M5 Pro—have surfaced fits perfectly with the current model, which is also available in two chip options. This suggests that the next Mac mini will be offered in both configurations.
Review: The current Mac mini
The 2024 model brought the first major redesign since 2010. The chassis was significantly more compact, with the Mac mini now measuring approximately 5 x 5 inches in footprint. Also new are two front-facing USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front. On the back, there are up to three Thunderbolt ports, depending on the model. The Pro version already supports Thunderbolt 5. The computer comes standard with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. In the US, the price starts at $599, while in Germany, the starting price is €699.
Design: No major innovations expected
Since the chassis wasn't completely redesigned until 2024, further design changes aren't expected in the short term. Apple is likely to retain the compact format, the front-panel connectors, and the port configuration. The focus is therefore clearly on the new chipsets.
Time of publication
Initially, there were rumors that the first Macs with the M5 could appear as early as 2025. However, there are now increasing indications that the market launch will be postponed to early 2026. This affects not only the Mac mini, but also other devices like the MacBook Pro. So anyone waiting for the next model will likely have to wait a bit longer.
Preview of the next Mac mini
Everything indicates that the next Mac mini will be equipped with M5 and M5 Pro chips. Further major changes are unlikely given the recent redesign. The update is therefore likely to focus on processor performance. A market launch in early 2026 is currently considered the most likely. Until then, the current Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro chips remains a modern and powerful choice in a compact format. (Image: Shutterstock / Djordje Novakov)
