The plastic can now officially be stored in the iPhone wallet - but there are restrictions. Anyone who wants to use the Girocard in Apple Pay will certainly be happy, but paying abroad or on the web or in an app is not possible for the time being. This is what the usage instructions say:
The digital Sparkasse card cannot generally be used abroad. Payments in an app or in online shopping via the Safari browser are initially only possible with digital credit and prepaid cards if the Apple Pay symbol is displayed as an available payment option.
Sparkasse Girocard: Requirements for obtaining a digital card

- You need a compatible Apple device. You can find the list of compatible devices on the Apple website.
- You need an Apple ID registered with iCloud and are at least 16 years old.
- The device passcode and the unlocking mechanism you normally use (Face ID or Touch ID) must be activated on your device.
- You are an online banking customer of your Sparkasse who uses the electronic mailbox and the push or chipTAN (including chipTAN QR) procedure.
- You are the holder of a Sparkasse card, a Sparkasse credit card (Mastercard/Visa) or a Sparkasse basic card (Mastercard/Visa) or a partner card.
- You have installed the app “Sparkasse Your mobile branch”, hereinafter also referred to as “Sparkasse app”, on your smartphone.
- In addition, minors can use Apple Pay if they use a physical card that can be digitized for Apple Pay with the consent of their legal guardian.
