Mark Zuckerberg: WhatsApp is “much more private and secure” than iMessage

WhatsApp is “far more private and secure” than Apple’s iMessage platform. This is what Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg claims in a new Instagram post.

In a Contribution, in which he shares a meta-billboard in New York City promoting WhatsApp over SMS or iMessage, Zuckerberg claims that WhatsApp is much better for privacy-conscious users thanks to its end-to-end encryption, the ability to make messages disappear after a certain period of time, and its cross-platform availability. Zuckerberg writes:

Apple and Meta have been rivals for a long time

WhatsApp is much more private and secure than iMessage, with end-to-end encryption that works on both iPhones and Android devices, including group chats. WhatsApp also lets you set all new chats to disappear with a tap. And last year we also introduced end-to-end encrypted backups. None of that is available on iMessage yet.

Apple and Meta have been rivals for some time, with tensions between the two tech giants rising recently. Meta has accused Apple of hurting small businesses and its ad business by introducing measures that allow iPhone users to opt out of tracking in apps and on websites across other sites. At a meeting with staff, Zuckerberg said Meta's competition with Apple is "very deep" and "philosophical," referring to the increasingly competitive AR/VR space, which Apple is expected to officially enter with a headset early next year.
